Since FAMU announced that it would aggressively defend its trademarks from unauthorized use, the University has seized 816 T-shirts, hats and other items.

So far, one person has been arrested as a result of selling counterfeit items. It's a third-degree felony, according to Florida law, to possess or sell merchandise with counterfeit trademarks valued at a total of $1,000 or more, and a first-degree misdemeanor if merchandise is valued less than $1,000.

Officers usually seize the counterfeit goods and warn vendors first, if the warning is ignored police take the next legal step.

The university receives 7.5 percent of the price of each licensed item sold. Last year, it pulled in about $73,000 from those items. So far this year, the total is about $46,000.

Both Florida State University and FAMU use Collegiate Licensing Co. for trademark licensing.

  2. I'm in south Florida and it is easier to find a Univ. of Maine tee than FAMU. I'm done with the newspapers not even covering the sports. They tend to closely follow teams from as far as Syracuse! They highlight weekly, some daily, all of the schools in the state and FAMU is usually missing or in the small print in the back. This has to change immediately!
