“Legacy Bowl” might dash FAMU football’s championship hopes

FAMU and all other members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) might be forced to forfeit their hopes of a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) title.

According to College Sporting News, the MEAC is considering giving up its automatic berth to the National Collegiate Athletic Association FCS playoffs in order to participate in a “Legacy Bowl.”

The proposed “Legacy Bowl” would feature the MEAC’s champion versus the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s (SWAC) champion on Dec 17. 2011. It would air on ESPN and the conferences would share a $3M payment.

The Legacy Bowl would replace the Heritage Bowl that was played between 1991 and 1999.

The idea of blocking FAMU’s path to the “big dance” is already fueling negative reactions across Rattler Country. As a potential solution, some have suggested that the MEAC could send its conference runner-up to the Legacy Bowl while continuing to send its conference winner to the FCS playoffs.

Rattler fans should contact President James H. Ammons, who has a vote on MEAC conference policies, and tell him that our fan base does not want a “Legacy Bowl” at the expense of a playoff berth.

  1. HELL NO!! Who gives a sh*t about some legacy bowl BS for measly 1.5 million for the entire the MEAC. That is much less than 200k per school!!!!

  2. FAMU has no championship hopes with Joe "I can't beat SC State" Taylor!

  3. Thank you, BIG RATTLER for posting the article!

12:08AM, After the MEAC office takes their piece, it's actually less than $1.5 million split between 13 MEAC members. Yes, even the two schools who dont sponsor football in the MEAC will get a cut. What's that like $115K per school?

I have no problem with this bowl game and taking the extra $$$$, just as long as the MEAC doesnt forfeit its automatic bid to the playoffs. We could actually send our champ to the playoffs, and the runner up to this bowl. Otherwise, the MEAC will be deflecting any chances that FAMU has at winning another National Championship.

Joe Taylor and our players suit up every Saturday to be the BEST in the nation. Not just the best HBCU. Ask them which hardware they signed on to compete for.

  4. Playoffs make no money. And, it aint like the MEAC champ does anything once in the playoffs anyway. LAst time one made a deep run was in '99---us.

Or we should have a black college playoff or bowl system pitting HBCU Independents, SWAC, CIAA, SIAC and MEAC.

  5. 6:04AM, You can make money in the playoffs. Just ask Appalachian State or Delaware or Montana about the revenue they generated hosting home games in the playoffs. Not to mention the residuals and indirect benefits of competing in the playoffs. The away team's expenses are covered by the NCAA, so there's no loss there either.

Also, just because the MEAC hasnt made a deep run since 1999 doesnt mean that we should give up completely. We have been very competitive and a few points within a victory since then (03, 04, 06, 08, and 09). Some of those games we should've won. Those playoff contenders dont have better players or better coaches than us. They just have more experience in the big dance than we do. That's why we should be scheduling some of them during the regular season.

  6. If FAMU participates in an HBCU playoff or bowl system, then we may as well descend back to Division 2 athletics. Hell let's just separate and segregate ourselves from the NCAA's governance completely, and form our own Negro League while we're at it! What would be the point of wasting money on D1 scholarships and team sports if we wont be competing on a D1 level for D1 championships? The athletic department would surely save millions of dollars, and would no longer be a strain on the university's coffers.

Let's not stop at football either. Since we havent made a deep run as a conference in any sport in the last 10 years, we shouldnt participate in the volleyball, men & women's bball, baseball, and softball NCAA playoffs too!

  7. Some of you complainers act like this is a done deal. Bashing FAMU & HBCU can be counter productive. Student prospects also read this blog and can be swayed to go elsewhere after reading such negative comments. Can we find anything positive to say about our great university or black college football. Personally, I don't have a problem with being black as some of you obviously do. Come on, chill out and stop the madness.

    FAMU IS GREAT!!

  8. You know there not much interest in MEAC vs SWAC football games anymore. As more HBCU's become more integrated on the football field those rivalries are fading. FAMU vs Southern use to have a lot of fan interest. The conferences already play in the MEAC/SWAC challenge at the beginning of the season. That's enough! You always want to compete against the best. Not just the HBCU's best!

  9. Why are we still in the MEAC. Those bumpkins are no smarter than te ones running the SWAC. We should've left the MEAC alone when they dissed us during the FCS attempt adn the NCAA issues. They have been holdng back for a least ten years. No creativity or leadeship at ALL! Move to a better run and nore competitive conference. If we take some schools with u all the better. The MEAC...

  10. Some FAMU Alums can be the noisiest and biggest FAMU bashers! Too many alums assume they know what's best for FAMU, but can't manage their own raggedy affairs. *SHM*

Joe Taylor is for this Chit'lin Bowl. I'm guessing that he thinks that folks will get off of his back about beating SCSU since there's no post tournament to play for if this happens..

  14. 12:31pm,

Are you saying that those who love FAMU and wants FAMU to be the BEST of the best(not just HBCU's), have a problem with being Black?

I wish the FAMU sports writer at the Democrat (Murraine St Clair?) would interview Dr. Ammons and Coach Taylor to find out where they stand on FAMU losing its chance to compete for a National Championship as a result of this Legacy Bowl. Then we can have it all in print, and hold authorities accountable if their actions dont align with what they've publicly stated.

I dont think Joe Taylor is for giving up the playoffs because of his near success in competing in them. That's the whole reason he left Hampton to come to FAMU (and chose FAMU over W. Carolina) because of the institutional (university and fanbase) support and commitment to succeed against the best, FAMU history of success in the playoffs, and Florida talent among other things. Plus that's not his attitude nor sentiment at practice and on the sidelines.

    ReplyDelete
  15. ^^^"because of his near success in competing in them in the past. Taylor has been there and know the system, politics, and "game" better than any current head football coach in the MEAC"

  16. I am welling to guarantee that if we opt to do this legacy bowl, HBCUs such as FAMU will have a difficult time recruiting the student athletes that Taylor has recruited the past two seasons. I feel that if we tell these recruits that the only programs that we will play are other HBCU and then at the end of the season we will play the "best HBCU" from another conference, then we lose on some guys that are on the fence about going to a mid major or an HBCU. Clearly these guys want to play "Big Time Football," and the only way you provide that is by having the opportunity to play "Big Time Ball" on the D-IAA level.

  18. Hey i have a solution. DONATE MONEY TO THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT. Hopefully everyone posting is, i am. That way money won't be an issue. I would rather go to the playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You all and a few other HBCU's like Bethune-Cookman, SCSU, and Savannah State should be in the same conference as Georgia Southern. The SOCON (Southern Conference). I hope there are people who are ready for change and not set in their ways.

  20. This is bullsh*t, why don't we ask the University of Florida why they didn't give up their BCS bowl berth. Only, SWAC N*ggas would willingly give up the spot b/c winning is too hard.

The only people who think this is a great idea are the SWAC, the MEAC teams that can't win sh*t, the Basketball only schools, and the white school that can't wait to take our places.

    ReplyDelete
  21. You guys are crazy if you think another conference will accept us. The only thing we offer the MEAC is a big band a mediocre football team so why would a white conference extend an invite to us?

This bowl game will generate WAY more money for us than the playoffs. We can't even afford to bid on hosting a home playoff game in this recession.
