The Trayvon Martin Foundation will take center stage during the first FAMU football home game on Tracy Martin, the co-founder of the organization, will take the field to perform the pregame coin toss.
September 7th.

Martin and his ex-wife, Sybrina Fulton, created after the 2012 shooting death their unarmed 17- year old son, Trayvon. According to its website, “the Foundation’s purpose is to create awareness of how violent crime impacts the families of the victims, and to provide support and advocacy for those families, in response to the murder of Trayvon Martin.”

Head Coach Earl Holmes invited Tracy Martin to speak before his players during their August 11th practice. Holmes later told reporters that Martin will serve as an honorary team campaign through the 2013 season.

“He had some inspiring words and the guys played off of that,” Holmes said in a quote published by the Orlando Sentinel. “And we’re going to keep pushing for him and his foundation. He’ll be an honorary captain for us this year and he’s welcome any time.”

There are numerous connections between FAMU and Martin family. Daryl Parks, a FAMU alumnus, is one of their attorneys. Sybrina Fulton said that Trayvon was considering FAMU for college. And the Dream Defenders, led by former FAMU Student Body President Phillip Agnew, conducted a 31-day sit-in at Gov. Rick Scott’s office to protest the Stand Your Ground law that helped lead to Trayvon’s death

Holmes said he proud to support the work that Tracy Martin is doing with his not-for-profit organization.

“I think what he’s doing with the foundation is big and it speaks volumes and I want the football team and FAMU Nation to be part of that,” Holmes said.
