Lights, camera, sing! The FAMU Connection has been a staple in the FAMU community for more than 29 years, bringing show-stopping performances to audiences and perspective college students. Through the gift of song and dance, the FAMU Connection tells the story of FAMU’s 126-year history.

The group of dynamic students will bring their message of FAMU excellence to Orlando during the university’s scholarship and recruitment fair today, Friday, Nov. 22 at 9:30 am at the Orange County Convention Center.

“I enjoy being a part of the Connection because it gives us so much experience with singing and dancing, and it allows for us to explore new ideas and talents, as well as interact with extraordinary people,” said Charmaine Shaw, a sophomore theater performance student from Orlando, Fla. “With each performance, we give our all on the stage and we hope in return, we inspire others to attend FAMU and get an education, so they, too, can do what they love.”

The FAMU Connection is comprised of university students from various disciplines. Their current show involves 12 singers, three musicians and four technical crew, performing their own renditions of the popular songs, “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke, “Grown Woman” by Beyoncé and “Lovely Day” by Kirk Franklin.

New to the team are familiar faces, James Webb and Marci Duncan, who were recently named co-directors of the illustrious group. The FAMU alumni say they are excited to work with the talented group of young performers. They added that they hope to bring a show that is indicative to the flavor of FAMU.

“We hope all audiences get a sense of FAMU’s culture, an awareness of FAMU’s accomplishments, and an introduction to all the wonderful amenities FAMU has to offer,” said Webb, a former theater student.

The team travels on a majority of the university-sponsored recruitment tours, bringing their own sense of flair to the stage.

“As theatre professors, we want the students to have an appreciation for the bus-and-truck touring experience,” Duncan said. “We also hope the students will take a greater sense of pride in their school and cherish this opportunity to serve as ambassadors for their university.”
