FAMU, which publicly announced the members of its head football coach search advisory committee on Nov. 4, has set an application deadline of Nov. 17 for candidates interested in the position.

“The primary thought I have that I share with the committee and the university is you have to have a father figure,” said advisory committee chairman John Wooten said in a quote published by the Orangeburg Times and Democrat. “And an excellent teacher of the skills of football itself. That is one of the primary things a coach has to have. Also, the ability to motivate. We’re talking about people that can recruit and can show the parents exactly what these young kids can get out of Florida A&M.”

The job description states that “preference will be given to applicants with a Master’s Degree and at least 3 years of college head coaching experience.”

Previous Head Football Coach Earl Holmes spent five years as a FAMU coaching assistant, with two seasons in the defensive coordinator position, before being promoted to acting head coach. His predecessor Joe Taylor came to FAMU in 2007 with more 20 years of collegiate head coaching experience at Howard, Virginia Union, and Hampton.
