The Florida League of Cities recently honored state Sen. Arthenia Joyner, a FAMU alumna, with a 2014 Legislative Appreciation Award.

Legislative Appreciation Award recipients are legislators who work closely with the League’s advocacy team and demonstrate strong and consistent support of municipal home rule issues.

“On behalf of Florida’s 410 cities and the thousands of municipal officials, elected and unelected, the Florida League of Cities is happy to recognize Sen. Joyner for her long-standing support,” said Florida League of Cities Legislative Director Scott Dudley. “Sen. Joyner has been a great partner in the protection of home rule authority. It is clear that she believes the level of government closest to the people should make the decisions that affect the quality of life of the citizens they have been elected to represent. We owe her a great deal of thanks.”

Joyner is a Democratic member of the Florida Senate, representing the 19th district. She was elected to the Senate in 2006 after serving as a member of the House of Representatives from 2000-2006. She has previously served as the Senate Minority Whip and Minority Leader Pro Tempore. Currently, Joyner is the Senate Democratic Leader.

Joyner earned her B.S. in political science from FAMU in 1964 and went on to earn her J.D. from the FAMU College of Law in 1968.
