Nelson E. Townsend, FAMU interim AD, passes away

FAMU Interim Athletic Director Nelson E. Townsend died this morning after collapsing on campus and being rushed to the hospital. He was 73.

“The University lost a dear friend, excellent leader, and administrator,” President Elmira Mangum said.

Townsend stepped in to serve as interim AD after the resignation of Kellen Winslow, Sr. late last year. He had previously served as athletic director of FAMU from 2006-2007 and 1985-87.

“We will miss Nelson Townsend. We join his wife and family in mourning this great loss,” Mangum said.
