Today, Associated Press reporter Gary Fineout broke the news that Rufus Montgomery had stepped down from the FAMU Board of Trustees (BOT).

Florida Times-Union reporter Tia Mitchell later posted the letter of resignation that Rufus sent to the Gov. Rick Scott, today.

“It has been my esteemed pleasure to serve my alma mater in this capacity and I wish the best for Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University,” he told Scott.

Scott originally announced Rufus’s appointment to the FAMU BOT in a March 23, 2011 press release. His term was scheduled to expire on January 6, 2016.

Rufus went on to be elected vice-chairman of the BOT in 2013. When Scott declined to reappoint then-Chairman Chuck Badger earlier this year, the board elected Rufus to serve out the remainder of his chairmanship term. He then won a full, two-year term as chairman in August.

On October 23, Rufus resigned as chairman after leading two unsuccessful attempts to fire President Elmira Mangum.
