FAMU volleyball team finishes as runner-up in 2016 MEAC tournament

The Howard University Bison captured the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship title on November 20 with a 3-1 victory over Florida A&M University at the W. P. Hytche Athletic Center.

Nicole Abreu paced Florida A&M  (17-12) with a double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs. Elena Dimitrova added 41 assists and 13 digs. Maria Yvette Garcia registered eight kills and 13 digs, while Valentina Carrasco recorded a team-high 21 digs.

The loss brought an end to the longest winning streak (14 consecutive games) in the FAMU volleyball team’s history.

Meanwhile. the Bison won their second straight MEAC Volleyball Tournament title and ninth overall. Also, the regular-season MEAC Northern Division champion improved its winning streak to 16 straight, having not lost a match since Sept. 17.

Khaila Donaldson was named the Tournament Outstanding Performer. She averaged a double-double of 13.0 kills per match and 15.6 digs per match. In the championship finale, Donaldson finished with 13 kills, 13 digs and one block. Jessica Young added 13 kills, seven blocks and four digs and Katherine Broussard tallied 11 kills and 18 digs.
