The Florida A&M University softball team, which has won four consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships, is preparing to defend its title again this season.

After this weekend’s University of South Florida Tournament, 19 games will remain on the FAMU schedule. 15 of the contests are MEAC Southern Division games. FAMU is also the reigning Southern Division champion.

Pitching has been key to the FAMU efforts thus far, as the duo of senior Veronica Burse (3-10, 3.88 ERA, with 40 strikeouts in 77.2 innings) and sophomore newcomer Kyaira Brown (3-6, 3.52 ERA in 69.2 innings with 40 Ks) have been tough on opposing teams.

Standouts so far on the offensive side include junior infielder Lauren Williams (.417, 20 hits, 2 HRs, four doubles, 11 RBI), junior outfielder Tyra Bowers (.316, 18 hits, five stolen bases), junior infielder Taylor Rosier (.286, 14 hits, four doubles, seven RBI), and freshman third baseman Hera Varmah (.267, 12 hits, 2 HRs, four doubles, 10 RBI).
