Behind the Spin: What Castell Forgot to Say

After thoroughly comparing Interim President Bryant's most recent press release with the facts, we've noticed that there were a few things that she forgot to mention.

+ In one instance, auditors found 49 of 100 expense transactions tested were incorrectly recorded. Mistakes came in areas where $95 million was spent on services, supplies, utilities and scholarships

She also forgot to mention that state auditors could not verify the following accounts (and the University wouldn't help them):

+ $3.1 million deficit cash balance (reported as a temporary cash overdraft)
This means that auditors could not verify that there was a deficit to begin with.

+ $21.7 million of contracts and grants receivable

+ $10.5 million of student-fee accounts.

Among the deficiences noted by auditors was:

+ "The university's operating bank account was not reconciled during the 2004-05 fiscal year."

According to Castell's press release, auditors cited the university for a lack of experienced personnel in key fiscal areas. She's been on the job for more than 18 months, yet continues to rely on temporary help in KPMG (whom former President Gainous hired back in January 2004. KPMG's intial contact with FAMU was approved by the Florida Board of Governors on Dec. 3, 2003, which Castell served on.)

It also interesting that Castell would bring a 2002-2003 audit by the US Dept. of Education, and restoration of $11 million in National Science Foundation grant money (which Dr. Gainous had already worked out an agreement with NSF that she came in a reneged on only to later approve that same agreement at tripple the cost). Individually and collectively, these two items are "off topic" and have absolutely nothing at all to do with the 2005 financial audit done by the state.

  3. The auditor general's office stated that the draft audit is a PUBLIC DOCUMENT. It doesn't matter how Castell Bryant and Elizabeth McBride try and spin the issue.

Bryant and McBride have a terrible record when it comes to dealing with the Public Records Act. They illegally withheld the NCAA report from the public. That's why Billy Joe easily won his public records lawsuit against our institution.

FAMU is a public institution. Therefore it has no right to hide the PUBLIC draft audit information.

RN, I hope that you not only post all the audit information on this blog page, I hope you forward the draft audit to the Tallahassee Democrat, Capital Outlook, St. Pete Times, Palm Beach Post, Tampa Tribune, Miami Herald, and as many other newspapers as you can find!

  4. Getting frustrated, Rufus? Your public fits of anger are getting old.

This year's bad audit is not a problem that Bryant inherited. She created it. The poor accounting cannot be blamed on Humphries, Lewis, or Gainous.

But knowing Bryant, she'll probably make you the fall guy for the bad audit. You should have heeded what we all said, Rufus. Instead of cursing at everyone on this blog, you should have been doing your job.

I can't believe that it has come to people cursing people out who they disagree with. This is a forum about the real facts and to result to such demonistic tirades speaks volumes of the person that posted the message above.

The person is 1) Castell herself or 2) One of her cronies or 3) someone with profound psychological issues-spiritually and intellectually dead-or 4) someone in need of psychiatric help.

The truth of the matter is that we shall all see who is dumb in the end. Quite a few of us were left in the dark and some of us would prefer to stay in the darkness. It is those truth seekers who will win the fight to save the university. Castell has got to GO and if necessary so does Lowe. Their imcompetence is incomprehensible and their treachery is unforgiveable.

  7. When Dr. Bryant goes, she better take the immensely incompetent Dr. Austin with her or else the remnants of incompetence will soil our campus for years to come
