The FAMUAN reports that the interim president plans to move convocations to Sunday. We're not exactly sure what that means, but here's how the FAMUAN reports the revelation, "hysteria broke out when Student Body Vice President Monique Gillum announced this year's university convocation will be held on Sunday instead of Friday."
"Way back when, they used to be done on the weekends," said Gillum, a sophomore political science student from Gainesville.
As of now, the convocation will be Sept. 24 at 4 p.m.
"Convocation could be the worst thing that ever happened, or it could perhaps build more student morale if students use the Sunday to go to university convocation instead of sleeping," Gillum said.
Gillum said the decision for convocation to be on a Sunday came from Interim President Castell V. Bryant.
"She doesn't want us to miss any classes. Some professors don't excuse students for missing a class on the day of convocation. She believes this will help heighten participation," Gillum said.
Any word on the homecoming convocation?
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS ONE OF THE FUNNIEST POSTS I HAVE SEEN!
ReplyDeleteWho will be the targeted audience? Surely not the students who may not come unless it's a class project. Well, the SGA people show up and many/some of the Greeks come to sit with their group. But attendance at convocations have increasingly been lower over the past 10 years.
There always seem to be a shortage of faculty and staff at the convocations also. Dr. Bryant - Now you are going to require faculty and staff to show up on Sundays? (ROTFL)
During the Fall, there are basically two convocations - President's (welcome back students) and Homecoming. Now, you can't have Homecoming Convocation on Sunday, because that's the day after the game.
I remember way back when that Mrs. Gore had something on the grounds on Sunshine Manor (now the counseling center's hangout), but I forgot what it was called.
And professors do not give excused absences - the Deans do. If the convocation is all University, classes are cancelled. Professors don't have to give permission for students to go/not go to convocation if the President has ordered that classes will be cancelled. That's a no-brainer, and any student who has problems with that, just need to go to their Dean's office, and follow up with the Provost's office, if the Dean's staff can't figure out whether to approve the absence or not.
I guess this is something else to complain about on this message board. Actually, it doesn't matter, if we're not planning to go anyway. I'm not going to Convocation at 4:00 p.m. on Sundays. So, I guess I'll shut up. :-)
I'm guessing there were Sunday Convocations way back in the day when Casterll was in school. Perhaps these were called vespers.
ReplyDeleteShe going old school for new school students.
I am not missing church to attend a castell vaughn bryant, period. I need all the spiritual reinforcement not to bust up in Lee Hall and beat her ass seriously for acting so damn silly.
ReplyDeleteI keep saying I am not coming back to this blog because I get so upset with the articles posted, but the university is not keeping us informed, they are just trying to keep us sedated with lies, lies and more lies.

ReplyDeleteI feel you! I am in constant conversation with God to help heal the hate in my heart and desire for vengenace towards her. It's an ongoing battle.
And I keep trying to stay away cause I get upset too...but it is the only place we can get any information.
Thank you RN!
Be careful what you guys say on this board - "I need all the spiritual reinforcement not to bust up in Lee Hall and beat her ass seriously for acting so damn silly."
ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't want your IP address revealed in an investigation if someone actually beat the woman. And you DO KNOW that anything you type on the Internet can be traced back to your computer, if there was ever a need to do so.
NOW - BACK TO VESPER! For the person who answered that question, thanks! I haven't heard that word in years!
Here's a "teaching moment for me." An early name for vespers is lucernarium, or “lamp-lighting time,” referring to the candles lit for this service when it was held in the early evening.
You think Dr. Bryant will let everyone light candles at the convocation? Probably not - Candles for the 5,000 plus students and staff that are going to show up on Sundays at 4:00 p.m., would be too much for that HOT, Non-air conditioned gym.
Just acting up guys... don't take this stuff serious.
Castell just wants to show who's in charge. It has nothing to do with missed classes or anything else. She just wants to do whats she wants when she wants it. And there's nothing anyone can do about it. She just wants everyone to kow that CVB is running the FAMU show. That's all there is to it. That, and an arrogant abuse of power.
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing that CVB can say that's important enough for me to ease out of my Sunday comfort zone to come to the stinky, hot gym on a Sunday evening at 4pm and sit on a tight bleacher for two hours. Castell has to be at least in her mid-seventies. My point? She's just trying to old-school everyone again, like during the day of her attendance at FAMU. Anyone heard of the word "vespers"? Now, that's real old-school.
ReplyDeleteProfessors can plan around convocations when the convocation schedule is announced prior to August, when they set their course schedules for the semester.
ReplyDeleteBut FAMU presidents have a long history of calling mandatory convocations on short notice. It is a tradition that needs to be replaced with good planning.
Everyone should have received a convocation schedule long before now.
Does anyone know where to find a convocation schedule on famu.edu? I can't find one.
Can't find much on famu.edu !!!!
ReplyDeleteWhy is is SO DIFFICULT to find things on famu.edu? The Search can't find scratch! You have to already understand the arcane structure of the university administration to locate something simple.
ReplyDeleteLord help us if the New famu.edu is no better.
Why is is SO DIFFICULT to find things on famu.edu?
ReplyDeleteWhat are you trying to find?
The NEW Famu.edu has old ass links! What's up with that? Some things look just as they were under President Humphries. What an ugly bandage.
