WHEN I READ THE POST, I said to myself, "Now watch. Someone is going to say something about Rev. Holmes sending that on his letterhead." AND I ASK the 8:08 writer... Does it really matter? Rev. Holmes did not say, "As the pastor of Bethel Baptist."
You're looking at a tree (letterhead).... try looking at the forest (the problem that people have not gotten paid)and Rev. Holmes wants to TALK ABOUT THIS WITH THE TRUSTEES.
But, all of you know that Lowe IS NOT going to do this!
8:08--I agree with you. "Church" letterhead should ONLY be used if the correspondence is related to church business. Holmes' position on the board is NOT, I repeat, NOT, related to "church business." To 8:27--you are so misinformed if you think this correspondence is okay to be written on the church's letterhead. RB Holmes' pastorship of Bethel Baptist Church has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with the BOT, and he has no professional business using the letterhead to address BOT concerns and issues. If you cannot see that this is a faux paus, then you are about as misinformed and uninformed as the good preacher is about what kind of social blunder he has committed. At the very least the correspondence should have been written on BOR letterhead from--from one board member to another. At the most, the letter should have been written on his own personal letterhead with, perhaps, his own address, but this is not something I would advocate either. BOT letterhead should have been used for this correspondence regarding university business. Some folk, no matter what their position in life, simply don't know protocol. The good preacher makes a valid point in terms of the need to address these grave concerns regarding students' pay, but is (the whole of) Bethel Baptist Church concerned about the pay of these students? I dare say that it is not a concern of the entire congregation and does not concern them. Therefore, the letter should not be written on the "church letterhead." Professionalism is important, especially when you're dealing with such public issues as these. It's no wonder that on many issues the BOT is divided. Some folks simply don't know the basics of professionalism.
The real issue here is Castell and he inability to run FAMU and get people paid. It was Challis Lowe and Castell that critized Dr. Gainous on his dealings pertaining to fiscal responsibility. Now the SHOE is on her foot and she has done more harm to FAMU than anyone in its history. Castell and her cronies are not doing their jobs. Maybe she think these are ghost employees as she alledged when she conducted the payroll audit back in 2005. It is two years later and we know she is a "liar and a fate". She needs to confess and come clean with the public about her "low-down dirty dealings and tricks".
I'm glad some current FAMU students have started a blog. But it looks as if "FAMU Set Friday" is more about FAMU's Deltas than about the critical issues affecting FAMU's students.
Where are the stories about how students are being affected by the unpaid employees, Arts & Sciences deficit, instability in financial aid, and enrollment drop?
If "FAMU Set Fridays" is to follow in RN's footsteps, it needs to be focused on a wide variety of student news and inside information rather than a promotion vehicle for one campus sorority.
After taking a closer look at "Set Fridays," I must admit I was mistaken in my first observation. This website is not promoting Deltas; it is lambasting them.
Still my question remains, just how broad is the new blog's coverage of FAMU going to be? I think Castell and her administration affect the welfare of the student body much more directly than the upcoming Delta line. If you "Set Fridays" wants to gain the same respect as RN, it needs to be able to ascertain what's really important and provide critical information on those topics.
To Anonymous 2/15/2007 9:40 PM - This is the person who first responded about the letterhead (8:27). It's not about being misinformed, professionalism, or any of that stuff.
You took too much time in writing that response to me. I apologize that I stepped on your toes, brogans, stilletos, or whatever you have on.
Rev. Holmes did a noble thing to ask for this emergency meeting! He could have written it on a paper napkin in a restaurant (by the way.. this is how many business ideas have begun).
I am a seasoned person, so I have seen the problems in the 50s, 60's, etc. Instead of spending our time on something such as the letterhead something was written on, let's spend our time trying to resolve the problem at hand. PEOPLE WHO WORK NEED TO GET PAID! Put your efforts and passions toward that, my sister (or brother).
PUT YOUR PASSION WHERE IT WILL MAKE THE MOST DIFFERENCE! 'z'
and to "z" @ 8:27 I say to you...what about separation of church and state! As FAMU is a state entity. I am full aware of the message he is sending and I appauld him for doing his JOB!!!! The church stationary was no red herring for me...at the same time church business has nothing to do with FAMU BOT business. dont mix the two! and if you really wanna know I dont think Holmes needs to be on oour board anyway...Im so sick of these pimps on the pulpit thinking they have a say in the affairs of black people just because we are so spiritual. The Office of Student Activities and FAMU PD are investigating to find who stole the list of the spring 2007 line of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority that was leaked over the Internet this week.
Anonymous e-mails were sent to members of the organization from an undisclosed e-mail address. It revealed the 56 students who were pledging.
Within those e-mails was a PowerPoint presentation with photos of the women, their hometowns, GPAs, majors and the clubs and organizations to which they belong.
"We're looking at if there was an intentional or unintentional leak with regard to the list," said Morolake' Laosebikan-Buggs, director for the Division of Student Affairs.
Buggs went on to explain that if anyone from OSUA or the registrar's office had stolen the list, that person would be terminated immediately.
Lt. Angela Kirkland said the investigation is pending.
"We are attempting to locate anybody on this incident and decide whether any criminal activity has taken place," Kirkland said.
An official from the national chapter of Delta Sigma Theta said punishment could be handled in various ways if the list was official. Cases of this matter are typically handled internally and are not available for the public, she said.
Tiffany Williams, 23, a graduating MBA student from Hattisburg, Miss., said she has full confidence that the situation will be corrected.
"I am flattered that someone would spend 319 minutes putting together a PowerPoint presentation about my organization," said Williams, president of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta.
"We have always been a strong organization and have always overcome obstacles, and that's exactly what we will continue to do," Williams said.
She had no comment concerning whether the line will proceed this semester.

Nobody's trying to "divert" anything from anywhere. It's just that, as the poster said, some of you people can be so ignorant of things. And no matter what Holmes says or don't say, the truth is the truth and plenty times we don't want to hear it. What Holmes said ain' gone make folks get their money any quicker. BETA NU HAZING!!!! The Beta Nu chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. starts off its pre-hazing process with a phone call to the aspirant in September. They will ask the individual if he wants to be a member of there organization. Before the aspirant can respond a member of Beta Nu instructs him to call back with an answer at a specific time. It will be something like call me on Sunday Night at 7:50. When the aspirant returns the call in a few days, he is then told to meet an Alpha at a public restaurant such as Burger King, Waffle House, Wendy’s, McDonalds, and Krispy Kreame Doughnuts. He is also instructed to bring a pen, paper, and a book bag as well as to wear a baseball cap. At this meeting the person aspiring to be an alpha is given a list of 5-8 names with phone numbers. The aspiring alpha is told that he has to call these people between the hours of 5-10 p.m. every night. They won’t answer the phone because they want him to be persistent so he might call each person 10 or more times a night. His goal when they finally do answer the phone is to set up a meeting with the Alpha. These meetings are one on one and in a public place, usually a restaurant such as the ones listed before. Many of these meetings will be at 6 or 7 a.m. These meetings are very informal. They are basically a chance for the Alpha’s to get to know the candidate, and vice versa. After a few weeks of that, the next phase of the hazing process starts. They make the candidate pull his transcript off of the computer so they can analyze it. The candidate is given another 5-8 names with phone numbers to add to the list he already has. Now he has double the number of people to call between the hours of 5-10 p.m. Now the aspiring alpha sets up meetings and they aren’t one on one. Nor are they as laid back and informal, now he is going to Alphas homes. There are probably 4-10 Alphas at these meetings. He is asked such thought provoking questions as what would you do if we hit you in the head with a brick. He is also mentally hazed with a barrage of other questions. The aspirant has to be ready to answer his phone at all times. At any time day or night he can be called and told to meet some one somewhere without much preparation time. The candidate will also get a call and be told what the rules are. He is told certain colors of clothes that aren’t acceptable to where. He is told not to where earrings. He is told not to speak to or be around females. He is told not to do anything social but Alpha parties. When he does go to Alpha parties he will be charged more than everyone else. He will also be forced to buy Alphas drinks weather or not he is 21. He is told not to be on the set. He is told not to touch the grass on campus. Then the group phase of the process begins. The aspirant now makes his calls and meetings with alphas along with a group of 4-6 other aspirants. Now when they meet they are given information to learn. When they either don’t know their information or violate one of the rules they receive a physical punishment. The physical punishment starts off with pushups, sit-ups, and other workout related activities. Then the aspirants start getting the boot. The boot is when they are literally kicked in the butt by the Alphas. After receiving the boot for a little while the aspirants start getting books. Getting books is like taking wood but with a book. The Alpha’s make the aspiring Alpha bend over and get hit with a book in the rear-end. Then after books the candidates move up to actual wood. The alphas beat Tony brown so badly on Thursday January 10 that he had to go to the emergency room. On Thursday January 18 everyone who had made it through the pre-hazing process thus far was introduced. Then they became Pharos on Friday January 25, even though the application for initiation was do Friday February 1. Are people supposed to be Pharos who haven’t even turned in applications? This process is the same process that Beta Nu has been using ever since they got back on the yard in 2004. They should have learned there lesson back then that hazing is wrong. There should definitely be an investigation done now that you have been made aware of these findings. Violators of the Florida A&M non-hazing policy, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated non-hazing policy and legal hazing laws should be punished immediately. These punishments should include either suspension or expulsion from your organization. In addition the spring 2008 initiates should be disbanded.
Any trustee that tries to prevent this meeting from happening should be stoned on the set.
