Incompetents blame subordinates

Rosevelt Wilson over at the Capital Outlook wrote, "In 1977 during a graduate class in organizational behavior, my professor said, “A telltale sign of incompetence in organizational leadership manifests itself when superiors blame subordinates for organizational failures or shortcomings.”

I won’t call it incompetence because many of the frustrated unpaid employees had reached that conclusion long before I was reminded of my professor’s words last week.

I'll add my two cents to Mr. Wilson's recollection and observation. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck!

  4. COME ON AMMONDS, COME GIT SOME OF THIS.

  5. Whatever Ammons does can't be any worse than what's being done now (or can it?). We'll just have to wait and see.

  6. It's amazing that no other college or university in the WORLD has had this problem in 2006-2007! FAMU is #1 for more reasons than you can.......

  7. It's only fair that Ammons finishes the clean up. Bryant inherited this mess. Now all of the players who have done all of the shady stuff in the past have turned on each other.

  8. Bryant did not inherit the payroll mess. Hundreds of paychecks were not being held up until she began tampering with the university's finances.

She has no one to blame here but herself.

I agree, it's time for Castell to jump on her broom and fly away.

Does anyone have a bucket of water to melt this witch?

  10. I just got it. "Broom, Broom, Broom" like the Mazda commercial "Zoom, Zoom, Zoom". This is hilarious! ROTFLMBAO!

  11. 3:53 says Bryant inherited this mess. Hmmmmmm.....ok maybe she did. But IF she did why did she have press releases stating that she had cleaned up the mess she inherited?? Didn't she tell everybody she had cleaned up everything??

It's kinda late 26 months into the gig to start blaming payroll issues on previous administrations. What about the much ballyhooed payroll audit?? Wouldn't that have uncovered payroll issues that existed prior to her being in office?

  12. With the president's office still signing every little requisition, it's no wonder the financial system at FAMU has slowed down so much.

Why wasn't the system fixed and that emergency measure removed after a couple of months? It's been like that for, how long? Two years now?

  13. 12:39--we don't know if no other college or university has had these problems. We know about FAMU, because our instution is an HBCU and because the incompetence is so highly mediarized. Believe you me, there are other insitutions that are not faring much better, but our situation is more public because there is so much attention being given it. I dare say that we are the only ones out there, though.

  15. Dr Bryant said:
“My quick review of the available payroll information for the situation, with which we are now facing, is some persons at the control points are signing personnel action documents without questions or careful thoughts. There appears to be no regard for university, state and federal requirements.”

I am not a big fan of Dr. Bryant's tactics and I share most of the key points of criticism. But... this is true. I know it first hand. People are hiring OPS employees, mostly students, without varifying that the funds are indeed avaiable.

It's a habit of many departments an although this is a very unfortunately problem for those that were hired under this condition, its refreshing to know that the systems of control can now catch these budget loop-holes.

I think the new system should have been rolled out in the summer. But I'm sure that their was alot of pressure from other stakeholders to get this done.

Processes for managing OPS budgets are out of control and it's going to hurt (at least in the short run) to fix it. From an OPS perspective, we are living above our means.

No one is capable of managing the entire university. You trust subordinates to provide good council and make sound decisions. Now if you hire fools and let foolish things go unchecked than that's another problem and a problem that Dr. Bryant needs to except.

Incompetents blame subordinates but blaming subordinates is not a sign of incompetence.

  16. Dr. Ammons doesn't need to bring a broom with him to clean house. He needs to bring a vacuum cleaner! They all gotta go.
