Former Florida A&M football coach Billy Joe, one of the most successful coaches in the history of black college football, will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame later this year as a member of the latest "Football Championship Subdivision" class.He follows another local legend, FSU Coach Bobby Bowden, into the Hall along with one other coach and four players from Div. IAA, II, III and the NAIA. Joe coached at Cheyney University (1972-78) in Pennsylvania, Central State University (1981-93) in Ohio and then at FAMU (1994-2004), compiling a career record of 237-108-4.

"Everyone knows who's No. 1, Eddie Robinson," Joe said of the winningest coach in black college history. "But I'm no. 2. A lot of people don't realize that."
Joe, 66, has been out of coaching in Tallahassee and working on a book about his famous "Gulf Coast" offense since leaving FAMU after the 2004 season. He was wrongly terminated by FAMU interim president Castell Bryant and last December reached an out of court settlement with the university for his final year of salary.
This award, college football's highest, now writes a dramatically different ending to Joe's career.

ReplyDeleteIt was a shame he was fired, because Corbin had an ax to grind with him for not playing his sorry ass son when Joe coached at Central State.
Castell and E. Newton (where is he now) Jackson were just the conduits for this henious act by Corbin.
I believe Billy Joe's staff brought about his fall. Instead of firing his brothers and some of the others, he looked the other way and allowed his football program to get out of control.
ReplyDeleteI think this is good for Coach Joe. His differences with FAMU aside, it's still good to recognize another great Black coach. We don't get too many of them, so congratulations on this honorable accomplishment!
ReplyDeleteBilly Joe has displayed more class than any of the morons sitting in Lee Hall. The only Hall of Fame that Castell Bryant will get inducted into is the Hell Hall of Fame. She deserves to be inductee #1. As badly as the university treated Billy Joe during all of his years at the school, he still has never, ever said a disparaging word about anyone associated with his dismissal and/or treatment of him. He's good people, continues to be good people, and I, for one, am glad to see that he is not bitter and has taken his skills to an institution that will, hopefully, appreciate him more than FAMU did.
ReplyDeleteWhether or not Joe should or should not have hired and, subsequently, fired his own brother does not compare to the treatment he received at the hands of that horrendous James Corbin. Corbin, as one poster has said, had a terrible ax to grind with Billy Joe, and when he saw an opportunity to get back at the man, he didn't hesitate to do so. Corin's child was a sorry-assed athlete and Joe wanted a winning team at CSU. Simple as that. While Corbin was busy kissing WFA over the years and making deals with Jeb Bush, he should have been honest with his son and told he he didn't have a lick of talent and to just go on and find something else to do besides whining about not being allowed to play ball. Bill Joe will always be a winner, because he's a man who has principles and integrity, something James Corbin (and the other idiots in Lee Hall) knows nothing about.

Despite all of the Corbin, Cast-Hell created chaos, FAMU continues to thrive! Congrats to Coach Joe! He certainly deserved better than how FAMU treated you in the end. The Gainous/Corbin administration under Joe Ramsey and E Newton Jackson destroyed Coach Joe's program. But Coach Joe was and is being vindicated in the end. Coach Joe has class! The afore mentioned are all ASSES!

Now, let me show up in class half-drunk or get arrested for DUI.
