Thirty faculty and staff jobs could be eliminated, class sizes could be doubled and current administrators may have to return to teaching, FAMU President James Ammons said Friday.
It's all due to budget cuts and penalties at Florida A&M University, the first-year-president said.
Faculty and staffers groaned in response. Then, they voiced concerns about students and which jobs would be cut. As it relates to jobs, Provost Cynthia Hughes Harris said cuts have not yet been specified. Each department, she said, has turned in plans to administrators.
In forums Friday, Ammons told faculty, staffers, administrators and students of early plans the university has in place to navigate through the slashing of nearly $19 million from the university's general fund. That fund pays for salaries and makes up about $176 million to the university.

this will be good. trim the fat, get lean and be healthy... excellent in the future. You can probably think of 10 people that need to GO without even trying..I know I can. .. and tenure should not be a factor in the slashing (IMHO). Some of these tenured cats are the worst performers.

If you are sitting around and causing problems, taking two hour lunches, giving Faculty, Staff and students problems, because you don't know your job, you have something to worry about. If you are taking FMLA so you do not have to work, you have something to worry about. If you are spreading rumors and infecting the positive attitude, you have something to worry about. I agree with 12:02 pm, trim the fat and get to the lean.
ReplyDelete7:26--You are dead wrong. I agree with you that the lazy ones should go but this may not how it works. It may be partly a matter of politics. They should look at people's records. There are professors who are drawing $100,000 or more (especially at the law school) and they are not worth their salt. Nothing but hot air. They produce nothing, they have no reputation whatsoever, bring ill repute to FAMU. THey should be FIRED--layoffs of not.

You actually sound kind of bitter, possibly because something didn't go your way maybe. If anything, you need to take a long look at several others in that office. Mrs. Kirby does her job and does it well. Anybody who knows or have come in contact with Mrs. Kirby knows fool well that she is one of the most knowledgeable and helpful employees on the campus. You take away Mrs. Kirby, then you might as well shut that part of the office down. You better believe that if it was not for Mrs. Kirby a host of students probably would not have even made it through. She even goes as far as walking them through (literally) the process of FAMU. Many of whom looked at her as a mom (and still does) away from home. As a matter of fact, they still acknowledge her in that way to this day. Many of them even send their children to FAMU because they know they will be in good hands with Mrs. Kirby. She is well-liked and has a great rapport throughout the campus. Either you're someone that fell victim to her not taking any mess from you and has therefore decided to launch your own personal attack or you just don't know her very well at all and have fallen victim to hater-mill. Get to know her first, before making blank assumptions. By the way, her name is spelled W-i-l-l-o-d-y-n-e. Like I said, this sounds like a case of bitterness…Moving right along because your response does not warrant any further attention. Mrs. Kirby, don’t know lose any sleep over this. Just because you have a degree doesn't make you smarter or superior than those who have knowledge of how that area is ran.If you ask me, there are alot of people who need to be gone and Mrs. Kirby is not one of them,I know for a fact that Mrs.Kirby has helped many students when others in that office didn't care or just turned us away or didn't know what to do (hint hint) E.W., Annarine,the preacher's wife,the A.K.A.) ReplyDeleteUmmm...let's be serious here. Mrs. Kirby is probably one of the only people in that office who is down-to-earth and not stuck-up or stuffy and who is actually willing to help anybody. She doesn't put on airs or fronts. She is very personable and approachable. She knows it's all about the students b/c at the end of the day, they are what's important and who pays all of your salaries. Get your facts straight.

ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how we as black people will throw one another under the bus in the blink of an eye, in hopes that it will get you closer to that "dream job" you desire. I am here to tell you today that the dream job that you are so naive about doesn't exist! People put their sweat and tears into a job to later be fired because of people who hide in the shadows bad mouthing and back stabbing you. It's time we grow up and become those responsible people in the community that our ancestors fought so hard to afford us the opportunity to be. We don't have to go around pulling each other back down like crabs in a barrell, there is enough room at the top for all of us. Let's learn from our counterparts on how to extend a hand to our "OWN" and help pull them up. It would be a shame to see so many valuable people get cut because those at the top stay in their cushy environment while you look around at those who are losing everything behind poor leadership. There is another way out there somewhere and it would sure send a positive message if we see you guys out there scrambling to find it! Also to the person who suggested that one of our best employees be fired you should be ashamed of yourself and be feeling really low about yourself. ReplyDeleteThat's the "Mama Kirby" I know! Mrs. Kirby has helped so many students its ridiculous. She truly cares about the people that she works with and the people that she helps. I know for a fact because when I went to FAM in '83 there was a mix-up with the funds which left me with no money for three weeks. But believe me when I tell you that I did not go hungry. Mrs. Kirby made sure that she brought me leftovers. She told me that she didnt want the reason why I didn't go to class to be because I was hungry and couldn't concentrate (smile). Due to my hectic career I may not always be able to keep in touch with "Mama Kirby" fortunantly my mom does. She said she always makes sure to call just to thank her for looking out for me. To tell you the truth I don't know too many people that would go to such lengths to help someone thats not family. But Mrs. Kirby is one and I'm sure I wasn't the only student that has Mrs. Kirby helped.

This is the same Mrs. Kirby that should have gone to prison with Jackie whatever her name was behind the financial aid scandal in the 90's; the same relative of Dean Henry Kirby (probably why she didn't go to jail; and the same evil cussing heifer that would cuss students out in conjunction with that HOLDEN lady over their netchecks.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!..........that'll be the day! Why do you think there was no mention of these cuts until AFTER all of those top dogs were hired. What's funny is how one employee has garnered so much attention. I was hoping to hear more of that "Support, Support" cry like we all heard after all those unqualified hires at unjustified salaries. Now it seems that possibly quality faculty and staff will have to go, to make rooms for their new gift salaries. I guess you're safe if you came from North Carolina. Shame that people that have been here all the while for FAMU most likely will be getting the axe.
