Alum is new COO of Highlands “Habitat”

John Hawthorne, a FAMU alumnus and U.S. Army veteran, has big goals for Highlands County, Fla. In his new role as chief operating officer of the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate, he’ll oversee construction that he hopes will improve the entire community’s quality of life.
As he told Habitat officials when he accepted the job, “I will not come just to build low income single family homes, but I would come to help build a community. That includes housing, businesses, community facilities, youth programs and public safety.
Hawthorne earned his bachelor of science in physics from FAMU in 1971. He also carried minors in mathematics and electrical engineering.
