On Friday, FAMU awarded its first Doctor of Public Health degree to Tammie Johnson.

The DrPH program is operated by FAMU’s Institute of Public Health, housed within the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Headed by Cynthia Harris, the institute’s mission is “to improve the health status of the poor and underserved through graduate training, research and service.”

FAMU is the first Florida university to offer this degree. The University of South Florida recently received authorization to begin a DrPH program, as well.

The success of the FAMU’s DrPH program could help the university make a case for expanding its Institute of Public Health into a full-fledged College of Public Health, similar to those at USF and the University of Florida.

  3. 11:35, not to say that your FYI isn't an informative piece of "news," but I think that a great majority of folk probably know that the public health industry remains a growth industry "despite the fledgling economy."

  4. 7:20pm- Would love to see your poll results on the "great majority". Hey- If it's news/info you can use, cool. If not, move on.

  5. the operative words in 7:20's comment about the 'great majority' are: "I think." those words eliminate the claim of 'poll results,' and make the statement on of opinion. 'poll results' are tangible. simply 'thinking' about something is only 'tangible' to the person who does it. thus, no 'poll results' are necessary, 8:39.

  6. Neither was 7:20pm's opinion/comment. I was only echoing a piece that aired on a nightly "news" program, that stated just that in reference to the job market during these economic times. Seems that they deemed it newsworthy enough to air to a national audience.

And yes, I do know that Dr. Johnson is already employed by our state.

  8. And yes, I do know that Dr. Johnson is already employed by our state.

That's outstanding. That means FAMU's already developing a strong record for placement rates in the DrPH program.

  9. Everything that's aired does not necessarily mean that it's "newsworthy." How many times has something been aired on television that members of the viewing public has concluded was not "newsworthy"? I think ANON
7:20's point was necessary indeed. The mysterious "they" may not have a clue in terms of what is and/or is not newsworthy. Apparently, however, you do. End of this discussion.

  10. 12:29 AM- Your added comment is utterly juvenile and completely unnecessary. Please check yourself. Have a blessed day.
