The FAMUan reports that FAMU Sports Information Director Alvin Hollins has received an ultimatum from the university administration: resign by Friday, October 2, 2009 or be fired.

Hollins, who’s worked at FAMU for 30 years, declined to confirm or deny the news.

According to the published report, the decision was made above the head of Athletic Director Bill Hayes.

The shake-up comes at a less than opportune time for FAMU. The university is in the middle of its football season, with seven games to go.

  1. Man this is crazy to relieve Alvin Hollins as SID because he done a pretty good job over his 30 years at FAMU. I don't he has been given the tools to do his job effectively in the last few years due budget constraints.

  2. Al Hollins has performed poorly for years and this is long overdue. What more tools, other than a computer, pen, and paper do you need to report sports on time and on a regular basis?

Lets not beat up on FAMU. Obviously Hollins has violated a university policy for this to happen the way it happened.

  3. Over 30yrs says enough to me...why dont people at FAMU and other HBCU's think that they need to retire? There are people at FAMU for 40 and 50yrs who do nothing to improve their skills or update their education and yet they stay and stay too long! FAMU has the worst marketing of its sports in the state! FAMU football for example is over 100yrs old, but if you ask young Black students about FAMU all they know is the dagum band????? There are some professors who need to be shown the door along with him and several of Ammons over paid Vp's as well.

  4. Okay..............let's not start in on the VPs, they are doing an AWESOME job!

We haven't raised funds in years and now that is happening; the audits are clean; enrollment is up; and distinguished lecturers are returning to the University.

FAMU is on its way to recovery after being on life support for 7 years.

Remember, it only takes a few months to destroy a village, but years to rebuild it.

  5. I don’t know who made the decision but we all know who’s over Athletics. She need to be FIRED...Alvin is what's right with the Athletic Department not what's wrong...for close to 30 years Alvin has worked in a department that lacks funding, at one time he has being the SID for 21 sports. When you are asked to do the job of 4 people and they refuse to get you the help that you need what are you suppose to do? I have seen Alvin be the first one in to work and the last one to leave. How do you describe him you can start off with, Loyalty, dedicated, knowledgeable, hardworking, acceptance, and astute to national trends. He’s won countless awards not only in the MEAC but nationally if I was ever to go into battle this is someone I would take with me. The current administration has gotten this one wrong as much as I love Famu I can not support what Dr. Ammons have allow this team do to the University. Several of the Older Alumn have stated that Dr. Ammons has lost touch with those who have give their all to FAMU. It is apparent the fight we fought to keep FAMU lights from going off is not good enough to merit your position with the University. It seems that loyalty means to Dr. Ammons what can you do for me right now not waiting to deal with the Alumni. Dr has thrown Alvin under the bus because he signed off on it. I hope that I wont have to pray for another administration change like I did with Castel when she was here but we are bitterly bothered by Dr Ammons decision and the advice the relocated Carolinians are giving him. They gotta go…..

  7. Now it's time for Ammons to resigned. This has no loyalty to nobody, not even his wife. The only material thing that motivates Ammons is money.FAMU beware!

  9. Do we want Dr. Ammons to resign because underperforming Al Hollins is gone? Give me a break. Hollins should have been gone.

Thank you Dr. Ammons & Team for putting FAMU first.

"Thank you Dr. Ammons & Team for putting FAMU first."

That the funniest thing I have seen yet. Accepting a certain bonus one week and then next week telling staff and faculty we have to get rid of some of you and telling the rest you have to work twice as hard with less resource all causes FAMU HAS NO MONEY hardly putting FAMU first. I'm sorry I was a supporter of Ammon's but that rub me the wrong way. Yea some of those VP's do need to go cause I seen no improvement in many departments. Example anybody out side of Tallahassee still can't get nothing done at FAMU. Email and phone usually work for other universities but not this one so tell me why that has not been addressed as of yet?

As for Hollins can't speak about him don't know all the facts. But just cause somebody been here a long time don't mean nothing. Comes down to what have they accomplished and are doing now. I also do agree those VP's do prevent people from doing their jobs I have first had experience of that...

  13. 4:25 PM,

    Since Dr. Ammons & his leadership team arrived;

1)We are no longer on SACS probation.
2)We recieved a CLEAN audit from the State Audit Department.
3)Our Law School has been taken off of probation and granted FULL accreditation.
    4)Our enrollment is UP
5)We have received funding to assist with the renovation of Sampson Hall.
    6) This administration is removing underperforming employees from FAMU's payroll. I hope YOU have a fall back plan.

There are more GREAT things to come from the Ammons Administration. So take your disgruntled ass and your MD 2020 back to your closet and keep your mouth SHUT!!

LOL that funny now you resorting to personal attacks. Its really funny that people can't point out a few things about Ammons and his administration without being attacked. That says quite a bit about his so called supporters. If you can take praises than you should be able to take criticism as well.

But I will bite.. how was I hired at FAMU I will tell you. I came to FAMU as a student and volunteered at FAMU for two years (how many of you can say you worked for FAMU for free). I was hired cause I did a good job (In other words I wasn't given a job I earned it here.) I eventually left FAMU after some years most because I wanted to earn more money and continue to challenge myself at my position. I could have stayed at FAMU you don't really have to do much but that was the problem I wanted to be challenge. I love FAMU the institution and I'm loyal to FAMU not nobody that works for it. FAMU has to the potential of being so much more, but to many small minded folks, backstabbing politics, and old fashion ideology keeps it where it is.

Now I know some of the people who are doing the attacking are probably the very folks most of us are talking about. And that is fine some of you are doing a good job and others of you just collecting a check and you are the ones that need to go. But instead of attacking me personally answer the question I had in my original message.

Why folks outside of Tallahassee still can't get nothing done at FAMU? In addition why do key departments even have mailboxes and why they always always full? How can people ask questions if they never can get in contact with people to ask those questions?
