FSU duplicating FAMU’s environmental science major

Florida State University just weakened any future arguments it has against FAMU duplicating high-demand programs it offers in Tallahassee.

FSU recently announced its plans to launch a bachelor of science degree in environmental science next fall. Provost Larry Abele said the university wants to offer the major because experts predict that environmental industries will be a major source of new jobs in the next decade.

FAMU already offers the same undergraduate major in its Environmental Sciences Institute, established in 1995. The program offers students “the opportunity to earn a general degree in environmental sciences with options for specialized concentration accomplished through electives in environmental restoration and waste management; environmental monitoring and instrumentation; environmental toxicology/risk assessment; and environmental policy.”

With FSU becoming increasingly bold about duplicating desirable FAMU programs, Rattlers need to fight harder against lame "no duplication" arguments that are used to limit FAMU’s own growth.

For example, FAMU should be able to offer doctor of education (Ed.D.) degrees through its College of Education. This is a high-demand program that brings in big revenue in tuition payments because it caters to current K-12 teachers, college instructors, and other professionals in the education field. These men and women don’t need as much financial aid as undergraduates because they are fully employed and take classes during evenings or weekends. But, there are opponents who are afraid that a FAMU Ed.D. program would siphon money and students away from FSU’s program.

Rattlers need to bring up FSU’s own duplication efforts the next time FAMU is told it can’t duplicate a FSU degree program.

  2. FAMU has major in house problems so trying to match FSU should not be one that they add to the list...The College of Education needs to be shut down and everyone there fired! Not another degree added, in addition they already have a PhD in Ed Leadership and so does FSU the difference, FSU funds their program(s)! FAMU needs to have a major change in the way they think. FSU is doing what anyone does who have no respect for another person or in this case another university and its not new it is what "they" do! And what do we do as Black folk? Cry! Now, what has FAMU done for FAMU lately? Get over it and Get real if FAMU wants to have an argument about something give me the numbers of students that have completed the program since 1995, how many students have gone on to graduate level work and completed their degrees from the program etc... Black people deal in emotional BS and "other" people deal in facts and are cold blooded. The ironic thing is they should be rattlers and we should be Seminoles...The Rattler is a cold blooded killer, no questions and no apologies, the Seminoles are losers who got screwed and now get insulted every saturday with a whiteman dressed up like one... Ahhh Tallahassee..

  3. One striking RATTLER1/08/2010 12:03 PM

11:43 It seems that you have something to say but the writing style you used made your ideas seem like more rant than discussion. Would you consider reposting in a way that lays out your concerns such that others can consider the validity of your points?

It is obvious that you have strong negative feelings but the cause of the ill will isn't clear.

    Thanks!

  4. The poster wanted to be ignored...therefore they ranted. The person doesn't have anything positive to add to the discussion. FAMU is a fine institution that is getting its house and order and has made great strides and continues to do so. The article talks about the double standard in our legislative decisions to consider additional degrees. Their rant sounds like a personal vendetta.

  5. You know as soon as I saw this on channel 27 news last night, I immediately thought about the stupid "duplication" rule the state tries to use against FAMU every time! This goes all the way back to FAMU's original college of law that was established before fsu's COL.

In my heart I know that FAMU should be pursuing the establishment of a medical school because of the need for Black physicians in FL and across the nation. There are only 3 HBCU medical schools in the U.S., and they are all private institutions. Foote-Hilyer was once a hospital as a matter of fact. We might already have a medical school if it wasnt for their terrorist acts and evil political practices. However, a medical program cant be pursued due to this stupid "duplication" rule. Therefore, FAMU is beating fsu to the punch with a college of dentistry.

    Double standard indeed.

  6. obviously FSU can duplicate anything they want b/c they have no respect for FAMU in the BOG.

They could always use the argument that YT is not going to be going to FAMU for anything, so it makes sense for FSU to have duplicate programs.

But we have blackfolk that go to all schools, so for FAMU to duplicate a program at FSU would take money away from them.

We are so far out of the club it is shameful.
