Original newspapers dating back to the Civil War, records from the era of black college football and printed documents relating to the Rosewood incident are some of the historic materials located in the Carrie Meek - James Eaton Black Archives, located on FAMU campus.

In commemoration of American Archives Month, the Meek–Eaton Black Archives will present a series of mini informational sessions that will reintroduce its archival collections and services to the public. On Friday, October 26, from 2-5:30 p.m., the Black Archives will present four rotating workshops for students, faculty, staff and community members. During the 20 to 30-minute sessions, presenters will share information about basic archival procedures; archival collections located in the Black Archives; accessing digital materials; understanding various components of academic research; and citing archival records and other resources.

“I think our students will learn a lot about different research techniques and correct citation usage during these workshops,” said Black Archives Curator Murell Dawson.

Archival Manager Aisha Johnson, who is completing a doctoral degree in archival and information studies, maintains that the sessions are equally geared towards the faculty and staff.

“I think faculty and staff will be surprised at the diverse collections we have,” she said. “Once they are exposed to our holdings, hopefully, they will use the records more and encourage their students to conduct more research using archival records.”

Instructor Librarian Tiger Swan will conduct workshops on accessing digital resources and Monique Thomas from the FAMU Writing Resource Center will conduct sessions on citation styles and usage.

In addition to the sessions, special exhibits featuring archival materials will be displayed on the third floor of the Meek-Eaton Building, where the archival unit is located. Throughout the afternoon, visitors will also have opportunities to tour the center’s museum exhibits. Light refreshments will be served. All sessions are free and open to the public.
