FAMU has not released an official statement concerning whether Corey Alston will stay or leave as the chairman of the FAMU Foundation Board of Directors. But on Thursday, February 15, Alston stepped down as the city manager of South Bay, Florida.

Gov. Rick Scott has suspended three city council members who are accused of breaking the Sunshine Law in order to hand Alston a $25,139 payment that prosecutors say was illegal. Alston, who faces a grand theft charge, was on administrative leave from his position before he exited the job last week.

Alston’s resignation letter only dedicated a few sentences to the criminal charges against him.

“I have intentionally not mentioned the pending legal matters,” Alston said in the letter. “The truth about the past, present and future will be revealed in due time. My name will be fully cleared.”

Alston added that he is heading into “a new employment opportunity.”

South Bay is a poverty-stricken, majority-black rural town of 4,500 people in Palm Beach County.
