Today, FAMU will celebrate the historic 1963 March on
Washington with a commemorative ceremony titled, “Keepers of the Dream” at 10
a.m. in the Quadrangle.
The original March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom took
place 50 years ago on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. It
is best remembered for being the event at which the Rev. Martin Luther King,
Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.
“FAMU joins individuals and institutions around the globe to
pause and reflect on the Civil Rights Movement and its tremendous impacts,”
said FAMU Interim President Larry Robinson. “As a university that has a rich
history in social activism. It is important to honor those brave men and women
who were on the front line in the struggle for justice. There is still much
work to do, but much of what we enjoy today would not be possible without the
efforts of many over the years.”
The “Keepers of the Dream” ceremony will feature a
performance by the FAMU Choir and remarks from local and elected leaders.
