excellence and community service is paying off – literally.
Today, Emerson was named the fourth of five FAMU students to
receive the Tom Joyner Foundation Hercules Scholarship during the month of
January.
Tom Joyner, radio personality, philanthropist and founder of
the foundation, recognized Emerson on today’s airing of the nationally
syndicated “Tom Joyner Morning Show.”
The scholarship is being awarded in conjunction with the
foundation’s School of the Month recognition program, which highlights FAMU as
its January “School of the Month.”
Emerson will receive a $1,500 scholarship to use toward
tuition, books and on-campus living. He maintains a 3.9 GPA, while serving as a
resident assistant and an active member of the Chief Financiers Organization
and National Association of Black Accountants.
According to Emerson, he is using his time at FAMU to get a
head start on accomplishing his goals.
“I have organized finance seminars to help educate students
on how they can successfully manage their resources to build and protect their
wealth for the future,” said Emerson a junior from Indianapolis.
Personal and professional growth is a top priority for the
20-year-old.
He said he strives to live by the motto, “Seek to be better than
everyone else and you will go far. Seek to be better than yourself and you’ll
be limitless.”
After learning of his selection as a Hercules Scholarship
recipient, Emerson said he felt honored to represent FAMU in a positive way and
wants his accomplishments to inspire others to be successful.
“It is my hope that my achievements provide others with the
inspiration to achieve their own goals and reach their highest potential,”
Emerson said.
To be eligible for the Hercules Scholarship, male students
must exhibit leadership skills, be active in the community and maintain at
least a 3.5 GPA. In addition, Hercules scholars must plan to work in a career
field that will positively impact the quality of life of others.
As a part of the School of the Month recognition, the Tom
Joyner Foundation will partner with FAMU throughout the year in a fundraiser
that serves to challenge FAMU alumni and supporters to make record-breaking
donations toward providing more scholarships to deserving students.
