McNeill, who has served at FAMU for more than 30 years as an
instructor and clinical coordinator, received the “Triumph Educator Award”
during the 2015 American Health information Management Association’s (AHIMA)
87th Annual Convention and Exhibit in New Orleans. The awards recognize the
excellence, dedication and service of health information management
professionals who have made steadfast efforts to enrich the field.
Describing her receipt of the award as one of the major highlights of her career, McNeill said she hopes the recognition will also serve as a testament to the high quality of instruction regularly taking place at FAMU.
“I hope this helps show how well we perform on a variety of
levels at FAMU. We have the best students and the best team of faculty members.
Recognition such as this shows that we teach with excellence as well,” McNeill
said.
Lynne Thomas Gordon, MBA and CEO of AHIMA, said the awards
provide a great opportunity to recognize and thank those who make a significant
difference in the community of health information management.
“The 2015 award winners are leaders who build our knowledge,
prepare future HIM professionals, and share their talent with the rest of the
field. Their dedication and excellence are what make them models for all,”
Gordon said.
Cynthia Hughes Harris, dean of the School of Allied Health
Sciences at FAMU, said McNeill is a natural leader who serves as a role model
for her students, the faculty who report to her, and for other directors as
well.
“She is truly an exemplary educator with the School of
Allied Health Sciences. Student interest is the moving force behind all of her
decisions. She is a person we can look to see where the bar is on different
things and know what has to be done,” Harris said.
In addition to the Triumph Award, McNeill was also selected
to serve as the chairperson of the Florida Health Information Management
Association.
