Anyone who’s viewed the #rattlernation hashtag might have
noticed that Florida A&M University fans aren’t the only ones who are using it.
Rattler pride is on full display at two high schools that are far from
Tallahassee.
Mojave High School in Las Vegas, Nevada has been using the
same mascot as FAMU and two of FAMU’s school colors ever since its opening in
1997, the same year FAMU was named the TIME Magazine/The Princeton Review
“College of the Year.”
An article published that by the Las Vegas Review in 1997 took a
look at how Mojave High was preparing to become another “Home of the Rattlers”:
“When we were thinking about school mascots, someone suggested `Razorbacks,' or something along those lines," [Principal Gail Dixon] said. “But we decided to stay away from that theme.”In the end, `Rattlesnakes' was chosen. Someone already has given Dixon a rattlesnake-shaped pen that twists like a snake and even makes a rattling noise when shaken. It sits on her new desk…The new school's colors are orange, green and silver. As part of a club fund-raiser, the students will paint small rattlesnakes on any new furniture that suffered dings and scratches during the move.
The official school website is: iamrattlernation.com. Mojave
High also has a JROTC Rattler Battalion. FAMU has an AROTC Rattler
Battalion.
San Marcos High School is located in San Marcos, Texas and
was founded in 1918. It chose to go with White & Purple as its school
colors instead of Orange & Green.
Its football team makes its grand entrance through a big
inflated, purple Rattler during each home game. The official website for its
sports programs is rattlernationathletics.com.
