Avis Proctor,Ph.D., who earned her bachelor's degree in mathematical education from FAMU, has been named the sixth president of Harper College in Palatine, Ill. Dr. Proctor is currently the North Campus president of Broward College (FL).
Proctor will take over at the nearly 14,000 student community college on July 1, 2019.
Trustees said, Proctor stood out from the three finalists who visited the campus in January to meet with the college board, administrators, foundation board, students, faculty senate and union leadership. In addition, she participated in campus forums that were open to the public and community.
A St. Croix native, Proctor has 25 years of experience working in the educational field, 20 of which working at the North Campus – first as a mathematics faculty member, dean and vice president, interim president and president.
She earned a master’s degree in teaching mathematics from Florida Atlantic University and a doctoral degree in higher education from Florida International University.
