Dr. Mary Turner, an adjunct professor of theatre at FAMU has been awarded a National Endowment for Humanities fellowship through the awards program for Faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
The grant will enable her to work on her proposed book on African American theatre as seen through the lens of Black Masks, a publication she has been producing on Black theatre for thirty-six years. During this highly competitive funding cycle, NEH funded only fourteen percent of the Awards for Faculty proposals that it received. The grant will begin on May 1, 2021 and run for one year.
Dr. Turner previously taught theatre for thirteen years in the Drama Department of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
She most recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the prestigious, New Federal Theatre in New York City, NY.
