The FAMU School of Journalism & Graphic Communication's (SJGC) will host a virtual forum “Politico@FAMU: Social Justice and the Political Divide” with journalist from POLITICO, a news source committed to delivering news on politics and policy.
FAMU SJGC students will learn about political reporting techniques such as concentrating coverage on important societal matters, watchdog reporting, utilizing social media to cover policy and campaigns and critiquing news-related public policy.
“This will be an informative event to advance the discussion on covering our current political situation. With social justice news being as valuable as it is today, our SJGC students will benefit from learning more about political reporting and storytelling techniques as they venture off into their careers,” said Francie Huff, the Knight Chair in Journalism.
Speakers will include veteran reporter Gary Fineout, POLITICO reporter and author of Florida Playbook; Angela Greiling Keane, managing editor of states and Canada; Sabrina Rodríguez, immigration correspondent; John Yearwood, deputy editor for trade and agriculture and editor of the Global Translations; and Maya King, national politics reporter.
King, a Tallahassee native, said, “It is so important that journalism include as many perspectives as possible and Black journalists are a crucial part of pushing the story of our country forward. In the midst of a pandemic and economic crisis that has disproportionately impacted Black communities, young Black journalists have the challenge of telling that story while holding power to account.”
The virtual discussion will be held on Zoom from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 19. Those interested in the discussion may click here to register
