Baseball team falls to 'Bama State; while basketball team uses OT to defeat them

The FAMU baseball team opened its season with a 13-7 victory over conference foe Prairie View A&M, Friday, in the Andre Dawson Classic in New Orleans.  The Rattlers, however, dropped their second game in the Classic 9-6 to SWAC rival 9-6 Alabama State on yesterday. 

The Rattlers will face Southern University today at noon in their final game of the Andre Dawson Classic. 

Basketball defeats ‘Bama State 86-83 in OT

In men’s basketball team needed a little extra time to put away the Alabama State Hornets 86-83 in OT in the Lawson Center. The Rattlers improved to 11-14 overall, 9-5 SWAC, the Hornets fell to 6-20 on the season, 5-9 SWAC.

 

The game featured eight lead changes in the first half, but the Rattlers held on to a 35-27 advantage at the half.  

Alabama State came out hot in the second half, getting to within a pair at 18:43 on back-to-back baskets. However, Florida A&M used a mini run to push the lead back to seven. The Hornets continued to work in the second half getting the lead down to one possession including following a dunk by O’Neal with 16:32 to play in the contest.

The Rattlers started to pull away late in the second half when Kamron Reaves hit a 3-pointer to keep Florida A&M ahead 69-61 with 4:54 remaining in regulation. The Hornets kept it interesting down the stretch but fell short in the extra period. 

 

The Rattlers hosts Alabama A&M at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
