Jackson State University's football team staged a thrilling comeback victory over the FAMU Rattlers, securing a 35-21 win in front of a crowd of 28,450 at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium and nationally televised audience on ESPNU.
The Rattlers fell to 3-3 on the season and 1-1 in SWAC play, ending their 17-game SWAC winning streak.
FAMU quarterback Daniel Richardson had a strong performance, throwing for 248 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception.
The game began with both teams exchanging touchdowns, with Jackson State taking the lead first on a 4-yard run by Emari Matthews. FAMU responded with a 70-yard touchdown pass from Richardson to A'Ceon Cobb, tying the game at 7-7.
The offensive momentum continued in the first quarter, with Irv Mulligan's 54-yard dash putting Jackson State ahead, only for Richardson to connect with Jamari Gassett for a 34-yard score, leveling the game at 14-14.
FAMU took the lead in the second quarter with an 8-yard touchdown reception by Cobb, following a 54-yard drive. Jackson State managed to close the gap with a field goal before halftime, making the score 21-20 in favor of the Rattlers.
The second half saw a shift towards defensive prowess until the fourth quarter, when Jackson State's defense made a significant impact. Phillip Webb returned a fumble 32 yards for a touchdown, and Emari Matthews' short touchdown run in the final minutes sealed the victory for Jackson State, 35-21.
