Spelman College President Helene D. Gayle, MD is taking a personal leave of absence, the nation's top-rated historically Black college announced Friday. The institution did not disclose the reason for Gayle's leave, stating that it is "effective immediately." Rosalind "Roz" Brewer, the former chair of the school's board of trustees and a limited partner with the Atlanta Falcons, has stepped in to assume day-to-day duties as interim president.
In a statement, Spelman College assured the community that the college will continue to operate seamlessly, adhering to its core values of care, commitment, integrity, reliability, and trust. Dr. Gayle assumed the presidency of Spelman in 2022, following the retirement of former president Mary Schmidt Campbell. Before her tenure at Spelman, Gayle was president of the Chicago Community Trust and has a distinguished career in public health, notably in the fight against AIDS and HIV, as well as leading an international anti-poverty group.
Brewer, has been involved in overseeing the college for 17 years, including 12 years as board chair, has a strong background in leadership. She has worked with three Spelman presidents and chaired the two most successful fundraising campaigns in the college's history. Brewer has also had an extensive career in corporate leadership, serving as president and CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, chief operating officer of Starbucks, and CEO of Sam's Club.
In a message to the board of trustees, Brewer emphasized her commitment to guiding Spelman forward, supporting leadership, maintaining stability, and ensuring the college continues to meet the needs of its students. She expressed her privilege in giving back to the institution that has given her so much, while also continuing to grow in her own career journey.
