Antonio Witherspoon
, a three-time graduate of FAMU, has been named the new University Registrar, effective January 3, 2025. Witherspoon brings a wealth of experience in academic administration, and student services to his new role.

“Witherspoon’s deep connection to the University’s mission and community will help propel the Registrar’s Office forward in helping students achieve their educational goals,” says Provost Allyson Watson, Ph.D. “His passion for student success and commitment to operational excellence make him an ideal fit for this leadership role. His extensive experience and deep ties to FAMU’s mission will drive transformative progress in the Registrar’s Office.”

Witherspoon previously served as a coordinator of administrative services in the Office of the Provost, where he managed daily operations, coordinated university-wide projects, and provided comprehensive support to academic leadership. He oversaw budget oversight, strategic resource allocation, and fostered collaboration to address academic concerns effectively. Witherspoon’s commitment to academic excellence is evident in his leadership of key university committees and his contributions to faculty development initiatives.

Before his role in the Office of the Provost, Witherspoon worked in the Registrar’s Office for more than 11 years. During his tenure, he spearheaded transformative projects, such as implementing innovative scheduling systems, streamlining credit evaluations, and optimizing degree audit processes. His efforts significantly improved student experiences, reduced processing errors, and enhanced operational efficiency.

“I am deeply humbled to return to the FAMU Registrar’s Office in this capacity,” says Witherspoon. “The immediate past registrar, Agatha Onwunli, set a high standard for innovation and trust, and I am committed to raising the bar even higher alongside a talented team.”

Part of that team is Marquis Stewart, Ph.D., who will return as the associate university registrar after serving in the interim leadership role for the last year upon Dr. Onwunli’s retirement.

Witherspoon has outlined three key priorities for the Registrar’s Office in the new year:

  1. Strengthen Relationships with Colleges/Schools and Student Services Departments: Ensure seamless processes for students and faculty by fostering strong partnerships across the university.

  2. Leverage Technology to Innovate Office Operations: Collaborate with the IT department to implement cutting-edge technology solutions that enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

  3. Assess and Enhance Existing Processes and Services: Continuously evaluate and improve processes and services to ensure they meet the evolving needs of students and faculty.

Witherspoon’s extensive background and vision for the future promise to bring significant advancements to the Registrar’s Office, furthering FAMU’s commitment to student success and academic excellence.
