The FAMU campus is buzzing with excitement today as thousands of students flood the "Highest of Seven Hills" for the first day of fall classes, marking the start of a pivotal academic year under new leadership and a renewed focus on student success.

More than 9,000 students—from wide-eyed freshmen to sentimental seniors—filled sidewalks and quads, reuniting with friends and mapping out schedules. For first-year student Quentien Ray, the day brought nerves and optimism. “The start has been pretty good, but I know it’s going to get a lot harder along the way,” he said. “But I’ve got people supporting me, so I’m ready.”

Seniors, meanwhile, grappled with the weight of their final chapter. “It was hard getting up this morning, knowing this is the last first day,” said Stephanie Daniels, a psychology major. “I’m trying to soak in every moment.”

The university also welcomed its 13th president, Marva Johnson, J.D., who began her tenure this semester after a months-long transition. Johnson, who previously held leadership roles in public affairs and public policy, emphasized humility and collaboration in her early agenda. “I want to listen and learn—to understand FAMU’s culture, its community, and its connection to Florida,” she said. “Our job isn’t just to educate students for four years, but to prepare them for lifetimes of impact.”

While Johnson’s presidency has drawn mixed reactions amid earlier controversies, students appeared focused on the rhythms of campus life. Many already have their sights set on FAMU’s famed Rattler spirit: the football team’s first home game on September 13 against Albany State University. “This is where we come together,” said junior Marcus Wade. “Class is important, but gameday? That’s FAMU at its best.”

As the morning rises on Day One, the university’s blend of tradition and transition felt palpable—a reminder that for all its challenges, FAMU’s heartbeat remains its students.
