Under the breezy Florida skies, FAMU sent a clear message to the SWAC: the Rattlers are hunting.
In a stunning display of power and precision, the FAMU softball team dismantled archrival Bethune-Cookman 9-1 in a mercy-rule shortened five-inning affair, while, nearly 200 miles away in Tallahassee, the baseball team delivered a masterclass in pitching and power to down conference foe Alabama State, 5-1.
It was a statement afternoon for the orange and green, a twin bill of dominance that underscored the program's depth and rising ambition.
The Rattler softball team came to Sunnyland Park with something to prove, and they proved it early. Much earlier than the Wildcats could have feared.
After a quiet first inning, the floodgates burst open in the second. With two runners on, sophomore infielder Keeleigh Spooner stepped into the box and unleashed on a 1-1 changeup, sending a laser shot over the left-field fence that silenced the home crowd and ignited the FAMU dugout.
“We knew we had to set the tone early against a tough team on the road,” Spooner said after the game. “I was just looking for a pitch to drive, and when I got it, I didn’t miss.”
But the Rattlers were far from finished. The power display continued as Amari Brown and Jordan Douglas each launched solo home runs, part of an offensive barrage that saw FAMU batter Bethune-Cookman’s pitching staff from every spot in the lineup. The game was called after five innings via the run rule, a merciful end to a brutal night for the Wildcats.
The victory pushes the surging Rattlers to 17-14 overall and, more importantly, an impressive 8-2 in SWAC play, firmly establishing them as a force to be reckoned with in the conference race.
Baseball: Granger’s gem and the third-Inning fireworks
From his first warm-up pitch, Granger was in complete command, mixing a sharp slider with a lively fastball to keep Alabama State hitters off-balance all night. He worked seven strong innings, scattering five hits and surrendering just one run while striking out eight.
“My slider felt good this afternoon, and the defense behind me was incredible,” Granger stated humbly. “It makes your job easy when you have that kind of support.”
The offense gave him all the support he would need in a decisive third inning. With one swing, William Brown broke the deadlock with a towering solo home run to left-center. The very next batter, Matthew Perez, sent the home crowd into a frenzy by turning on an inside fastball and depositing it into the same vicinity, a stunning back-to-back display that deflated the Hornets and put the game firmly in FAMU’s grasp.
The 5-1 victory was a complete team effort, built on Granger’ stellar start and two mighty swings that provided all the necessary offense.
A message sent
For the fans who made the trip to Daytona and those who packed the stands in Tallahassee, it was a night that showcased the best of FAMU athletics—explosive talent, relentless effort, and a refusal to be overlooked. As both teams continue their march through the heart of the conference schedule, Friday night’s sweep stands as a powerful testament to a program on the rise, one powerful swing and one pinpoint pitch at a time.
Both teams are back at it again tomorrow.
