Ammons has impressive track record
December 18, 2006

In five years James Ammons has guided NCCU through a building boom, which included a $36 million science complex on the site of the former Hillside High School, expansion of the law school, improvements to B.N. Duke Auditorium and construction of new dormitories and renovation of existing ones. And who can forget Ammons' masterful performance when new residence halls were found to be full of mold and hundreds of students had to be housed off campus?
Under Ammons, enrollment at NCCU has jumped from 6,000 to nearly 9,000 since the 2000-2001 school year. And Ammons is especially proud of NCCU's ability to attract National Scholars. Did we mention the biotechnology program that will help prepare NCCU students for jobs in that burgeoning field or NCCU's move to Division I-AA in athletics?

Ammons has done well. He was good at FAMU, he was better at NCCU, and back at FAMU, he'll be awesome. It would be a shame if we let Ammons slip away from our oh-so-close grasp.
ReplyDeleteNo way! Ammons is part of the old boy FAMU network that got the school in the mess that it's in now. Let him stay in NC and repent for all of the crap he let happen here. Gone on and fix NCCU. To let Ammons back is like putting the fox in charge of the chicken coop! Let's not go back to the days of the overrated leadership of the 1980s and 1990s. Yes money came into the school but where did it go? We need to move on to some new blood, not some recycled crap from the overrated Humphreys era.
ReplyDeleteRE: 12/18 @ 1:21 PM
ReplyDeleteI double dare you to try and tarnish Dr. Ammons' record. You are the most uninformed person to ever leave a message on the RN board. You must have just stepped off of Planet Mars. Dr. Ammons record speaks for itself. Dr. Ammons has established his ownself. Of course, he learned from a Great Academic Scholar like Dr. Humphries. Shut-up and go into hiding.
Ammons is part of the old boy FAMU network that got the school in the mess that it's in now.
ReplyDeleteWhat mess?
During the Humphries-Ammons era FAMU became:
-The largest single campus HBCU in America.
-The #1 recruiter of National Achievement Scholars.
-The Times-Princeton Review College of the Year.
-#3 among all Florida's public universities in research grants.
FAMU also created a graduate feeder program, an Industry Cluster, and a $1M surplus in the athletic department.
Those were days of unprecedented financial progress for FAMU.
Castell Bryant is destroying FAMU financially. She's responsible for the drops in enrollment, research grants, and fundraising. She's also neglecting the graduate feeder program and letting the Industry Cluster crumble. Castell does not understand how to make money at the university-level. This is not a community college. The president actually has to get out of the office and make money for the school.
Castell is making FAMU's money to dry up.
Yes money came into the school but where did it go?
The money went into the FAMU Foundation, which more than doubled during the Humphries-Ammons era.
Before everyone jumps on the BringAmmons Back bandwagon, we all need to look a bit closer at a person's character. I know that what people do in their private lives is no one's business, but one's character becomes public if that person is serving in a public capacity. If I say much more about the man's character, RN won't post this, so I'll just leave it at that. Like Judge Mabelean says, "Look before you leap." Now, that's all I'm saying.
ReplyDeleteyeah, Ammons is part of the old-school Famu; i think we need to get someone not associated with the university. new start. fresh start. clean start. nice start. smart start. Period. But folks are so gung-ho about Ammons until no one is listening to reason. He left FAMU for more reasons than the opportunity to be chancellor at NCCU. But people don't want to know the truth. Speaking truth to power does not sit well with many people.

ReplyDeleteLet he without sin, cast the first stone!
Ok, so pick one of the other,BARELY qualified candidates. Vision is a priceless commodiy. Say what you want, but do it with your gifts to the university, leave Ammons out of this. Funny that ALL of the Alumni FAMU has produced is blatantly disrespected by the likes of this cancerous group of people. If we cannot possibly have one of our own who is surely qualified lead us, then you (if you're really a Rattler) are likely not qualified to speak on any such serious mattters. Right, Uncle Ruckus? Get it TOGETHER people! Prolly thought that this current group (the practice team at best) of implants could inspire ANY sort of scholarship at the university level. Some undergrads have written more than this group, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteLies, lies, lies. The politics of personal destruction are at work in this presidential search process. The Corbin-Bryant cronies can't attack Dr. Ammons' stellar professional record so they are trying to spread false, malacious rumors about him personally.
ReplyDeleteStill the Corbin-Bryant mudslingers aren't getting anywhere in their efforts to malign Dr. Ammons. There is no truth to those allegations whatsoever.
James Corbin loves to try and tear down black men who intimidate him. He was always envious of Fred Humphries' success.
ReplyDeleteCorbin nearly destroyed FAMU's athletic department by driving it into a more than $3M deficit. Yet, he wants to talk about Humphries being a poor financial manager.
The people on this board attacking James Ammons are nothing more than Corbin's followers. They do not care about what's best for FAMU. They, like Corbin, only care about what's best for them. They have no morals. They will get what they want by spreading libel if necessary.
The facts don't lie, but people do!
ReplyDelete* He increased enrollment by 58%!
* He increased SAT scores of incoming freshman signficantly!
* He engineered a campus buidling boom!
* Recruited Top Scholars!
* Expanded the Law School!
* Law School Bar Passage Rate is 88% (same as Duke's at less than 10 times the cost) !
Ammons is a no brainer!
Dr. Ammons records speaks for itself. No one can distort his record. FAMU needs an immediate change from the hands of Corbin and Castell.
ReplyDeleteDean Ruth Witherspoon has been named interim dean of the law school. James Douglas is leaving at the end of the month. The three candidates interviewed for the permanent position have been rejected. A permanent dean will probably be in place by 2008. Nate Friends resigned from the law school.
ReplyDeleteWanna be informed at 12/18/06 @ 1:21 pm, the correct spelling of the 8th president's last name is
ReplyDeleteH U M P H R I E S.
It you are going to respond on this message board, please check your spelling and facts.

And don't forget the FAMU-UFF. They are now thick as thieves with Castell and Corbin (they can smear all they want, but that CBA will not be signed in Castell's lifetime, unless the UFF sale the faculy out).
Also, a new book that has lauded all of Castell's accomplishments authored by none other than the UFF president and couple that with the Wildman Billy whispering like Iago in "Othello" we are preparing for a tradegy the likes of Shakespeare in living color.
These people make me want to puke. They are two-faced and are no better the Castell and Corbin.
But hold up! The devil is a lie and these people will be brought to justice, mark my word. There is always silence before the fallout.
ReplyDeleteClink, Clink!
Let's not go down the path of innuendos. If people have concerns or issues with Chancellor Ammons, they are adults and should govern themselves accordingly.
ReplyDeleteI doubt if the people involved are so childish that they have not or will not take their concerns to Chancellor Ammons, directly.
Let's allow these folks to do just that and hold off on the disparaging remarks and comments, because we don't know for sure who's actually saying what and to whom.
Peace!
2:26, you don't know what you're talking about. While character may not mean much to a lot of people, it certainly does count in the larger realm of things. You simply need to ask the right people about certain things; believe me. I know what I'm talking about. Plenty folks elect to ignore certain details about folks' character because they are so blind to the truth. You have to recognize the deeds along with the misdeeds.
ReplyDelete2:26, no one has to lie about anything. You sre SO misinformed.
ReplyDeleteAMEN, 8:43!
ReplyDeleteRN:
ReplyDeleteDo you know how much input the faculty, students, and other stakeholders will have in the decision making process?
Who will be selected to sit in on the faculty and student interviews? What process will be used to determine which individuals are selected?
Will our voice/choice be a factor in the final selection by the committee?
Please let us know (if you know or can find out).
Thanks and keep up the good work!!!

Dean Ruth Witherspoon has been named interim dean of the law school. James Douglas is leaving at the end of the month.... Nate Friends resigned from the law school.
ReplyDeleteThank God for answered prayers!!!!!!!
anon at 928
ReplyDeleteBe careful what you pray for...we're losing a lot when Nate Friends leaves.
OK who is Nate Friends and exactly what's going on at the Law School. Will all you COL insiders email ME and give me all the details?

anon, 2:22--what are YOUR qualifications?
ReplyDeleteDear 12/18/2006 8:43 PM,
ReplyDeleteYou are a one sick puppy and a disgrace to our university. Don't you have anything truthful to contribute to this discussion?
It's rumor-mongering, mudslingers like you that stain an otherwise intelligent conversation and try to take this down to the level of a minstrel show.
There is no evidence to support your false claims. Period.
Now is the time for the faculty, alumni and students to UNITE! United We Stand, divided we fall!
ReplyDeleteThompson has grown a tiny HBCU, more like a large high school. Her next move should be a mid-sized one. We don't need OJT (on the job training) @ FAMU!
Johnson needs to understand the HBCU culture and environment, which is a lot different than UNT (University of North Texas).
Ammons took what he learned @ FAMU and applied it @ NCCU. The results are significant. NCCU went from a mid-sized HBCU to a large one and is in a growth mode. He's doing what FAMU needs to have done.
It's time for the faculty, alumni and students to hold a town hall meeting and come together behind Dr. Ammons. This should be done in early January.
We must "seize the time," "fight the power," and do what's ultimately BEST for FAMU.
It's time to "Get UP, Stand Up and Fight for FAMU!
Nate Friend is a 30 veteran of AT&T who tried to turn the law school around. Rather than listen to him the powers that be invested control of the law school to a two individuals who can't get the job done. He is but the first of a massive exodus that will take place from the law school. What a performance by the Provost yesterday when she addressed the COL faculty. Now COL faculty can see why she is not respected by the faculty at the main campus. Her lack of mental agility, knowledge, and civility is astounding. The ABA was right to question her ability to manage a law school.
ReplyDeleteNate Friend is a 30 veteran of AT&T who tried to turn the law school around.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lie. Nate Friends makes PSAs with his girlfriend. Worse than that he put her in charge of the legal writing department even after we took her exams to the dean because they were replete with grammatical errors. I say good bye!
And for all of those who are the "first of a massive exodus that will take place from the law school" I say thank God! They are probably those with questionable legal backgrounds anyway.
12/18/2006 9:28p.m. We were told the othr day that Friends was going to be named ID. What happened? Was Friends forced to resign or did he resign because someone else was named ID? What's your take on Witherspoon?
ReplyDeleteAnon @ 7:25 AM who wrote "Her lack of mental agility, knowledge, and civility is astounding. The ABA was right to question her ability to manage a law school."
ReplyDeleteYou are obviously a member of the COL faculty. Don't speak too quickly because most of you in the COL faculty are questionable & don't have what it takes to teach the law. Very few of you have published anything and it is obvious that most of you don't have a intellectual handle on your legal subject matter. How many have actually practiced? How many know how to get in and out of traffic court? Very few. So you need to check yourself
We were told the othr day that Friends was going to be named ID.
ReplyDeleteObviously they lied! Ha Ha Ha!
COL faculty are very good.
ReplyDeleteSome faculty members give immediate real time reports to students and former students so it's not clear that these postings come from a law teacher. All of them have their student posses to whom they pass information. Check yo self! Plus be careful of slander and defamation. Don't talk about the personal lives of faculty and deans.
ReplyDeleteSlander? Defamation? Isn't truth the best defense? The academic track records of most COL faculty speak. Where are the articles and the books? Anybody got a fellowship or anything prestigious like a Fulbright like the rest of FAMU? Help me out and give some facts that refute this observation.
ReplyDeleteTake a look at the case in the library. COL faculty have published. Also, one former dean and a current faculty member have Fulbrights. Don't question the reputation of the faculty unless you are willing to give specific facts. If you are a law student you know better than that. Why trash the faculty of the law school when you are the one who will have the same degree as the rest of us. Why are you tarnishing what we are all working hard and paying for? I have been satisfied with my professors. I just wish we could get a permanent dean. What are you doing to make things better other than getting on this site and trasing our teachers? Plus, rather than trashing the director's grammar, work on yours.
ReplyDelete"trasing our" You need to check your grammar. Pray tell who is this invisible Fulbright COL professor? Facts please
ReplyDeleteRufus...get back to work. Ok so I made a typo. Excuseeeeeeee me. You are the one with all the facts about our faculty. You figure it out! I notice you didn't refute the assertions about scholarship.
ReplyDeleteRN, you normally have the dish. What is going on at the law school? Who is the new leadership team? Why was James Douglas dumped after all the hard work he did? Things have fallen apart since Luney left.
ReplyDeleteDon't question the reputation of the faculty unless you are willing to give specific facts.
ReplyDeleteCheck out Footnote 19 in the most senior professor at FAMU COL's article "Save The Marriage Before
(Not After) The Ceremony: The Marriage Preparation
Act - Can We Have A Public Response To A Private
Problem?" Let's see verbatim fn 19 cites:"Living Together Doesn't Increase
Chances of Having A Good Marriage, JET MAGAZINE, February 22, 1999, at 49.
The director of writing lists a "Certificate of Appreciation for "Take Your Child to Work Day" by Municipal Courts , Houston, Texas, 1998 on the TSU law website as one of her honors and awards. The Texas Bar Association or no bar association is listed as one of her legal affiliations.
The Visiting Scholars at Harvard Divinity School is "a non-degree status that affords
students the opportunity to take courses at the Divinity School
and to pay tuition on a per-course basis. Students in this catego-
ry may enroll for the equivalent of up to eight half-courses for
credit within a period of up to two years." So is this a resume filler- pay for yo self to go to Harvard program?
Jet Magazine?! Prolly no bar admittance? Need anymore facts? I hope that the likes of these are on that mass exodus so that the FAMU COL can attract better legal minds.
Props to anon at 1100. How do you know this?
ReplyDeleteThe law school is only a manifestation of collective self-hate.If we were on the other side in east Orlando at UCF- publishing and other academic pursuits among the faculty wouldn't be an issue. Why continue hiring faculty members w/ backgrounds that are full of fluff? Why is it that we feel that mediocre is good enough for our people? Why assume that only the marginal students want to attend FAMU?FAMU COL should not be the grazing field for lazy attorneys who want to work a measly 3 hours a week at $100,000 per year.We got to want and do better.
ReplyDeleteAnon,12/19--4:00 a.m.--you don't know what you're talking about. Accept the misdeeds along with the good deeds. Inquire. Ask. Investigate. Be knowledgeable. Know. You, apparently, don't have a clue as to what is going on. You're probably one of those folk who jump on ANY bandwagon if it has wheels, whether the bandwagon is moving or not. You are SO misinformed about a lot that is going on at the university. When was the last time you were on the campus? I'm there every day. If you have no idea what the word "misdeed" is, then perhaps you need more than an online post to help you understand; perhaps you need a dictionary to help you define. If you don't know, perhaps, then, you'd better ask somebody.
ReplyDeleteJET magasine? Correct me if I'm mis-reading this post: Is someone at COL claiming JET mag as a publication?
ReplyDeleteThe senior prof (& highest paid) among the Founding Faculty at FAMU COL has an article she presented ("Save The Marriage Before (Not After) The Ceremony: The Marriage Preparation Act-Can We Have A Public Response To A Private Problem?" That has references to Jet Magazine as a LEGAL source. fn 19 of the article cites: "Living Together Doesn't Increase Chances of Having A Good Marriage, JET MAGAZINE, February 22, 1999, at 49.
ReplyDeleteCheck it out for yourself! Defamation? Slander? It's the truth! Make your own conclusions!
When was the last time you were on the campus? I'm there every day.
ReplyDeleteI believe you probably are on campus everyday. You are likely one of the shiftless, lazy, incompetent, conniving people hired by Castell Bryant who's rolling back decades of progress at our institution. Or, you're simply one of the cronies of James Corbin who thinks its okay rack up $3M deficits in the athletic department.
People like you are holding FAMU back. You don't want Dr. Ammons to come in because you know he'll give you your walking papers and bring in some new workers who are actually serious about uplifting our university.
If you have no idea what the word "misdeed" is, then perhaps you need more than an online post to help you understand; perhaps you need a dictionary to help you define.
And perhaps you need a dictionary to help you understand the words libel and defamation. You are trying to launch a smear campaign against a Rattler who has a clear track record of success in building up HBCUs.
You and all the others engaging in the politics of personal destruction against Dr. Ammons won't come out and say any of this garbage in the media because you know there is no proof and that he could sue you into next year.
You are a liar, a fraud, and a coward.
Charlie Crist is paving the way for Dr. Ammons.
ReplyDeleteThese Bush/Corbin/Cast-hell water carriers better get to updating those resumes', cuz FAMU employment is not in their future...
Looks like the drama at the law school is something Ammons could handle better than Castell and Austin.
ReplyDeletePlease! Are you for real? It's Ammons' should take part of the responsibility for the law school chaos. Don't forget it was Ammons who cast the final/deciding vote for former dean Luney who put all of this mess into motion. He put the name of the senior founding faculty member who cites Jet magazine up for tenure before the BOE.
ReplyDeleteAre you crazy? Don't you remember Ammons role in the law school before he left for NCCU? In 2001 the committee appointed to recommend candidates for the new law school dean post at FAMU forwarded three names to Ammons who said in a press release-"his academic achievements made him our compelling choice"
ReplyDeleteCompelling choice? Ammons obviously missed that one.
^^^^^^^^^^^^
ReplyDeleteThe law school was a lost hope when Henry Lewis came on board and it just went down hill from there until CastHell. Now it's flying down the a slope instead of a rolling.
Just plain old poor leadership and vindictive, retaliatory, ditching digging folks trying to make a name for themselves by destroying others. History will not be kind to the last three presidents that sat in Lee Hall.
The grand diva is not the most senior faculty member at the law school. She must have given you a bad grade in family law.
ReplyDeleteLet's stop being crabs in a bucket. Ammons IS A RATTLER! Ammons has prepared himself well. Obtained the skill sets FAMU so desperately needs right now and is offering his service. All FAMUans should be proud and rally to welcome him home as President!
ReplyDeleteHubba Ammons!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat is going on at the law school?
ReplyDeleteChaos as usually!
ReplyDeleteMany institutions have found out the hard way that the American Bar Association (ABA) is not an organization that plays games. They look closely at every aspect at a law school. Pointing fingers will not save any law school. When there is a problem anywhere it must be fixed. Employers, potential donors and alumni all look at the ABA response to an institution. If those who care about FAMU and education and the inequality in legal education and access to legal services do not wake up soon, much will be lost. How unfortunate.
ReplyDelete
