Students demand answers

A little over 100 students gathered near the eternal flame and Lee Hall yesterday to lodge a peaceful demonstration in an an effort to begin to seek answers from the administration regarding the current state of affairs at FAMU.

"Today is the day we will ask questions," said Kyle Washington, a sophomore physical-education student from Tallahassee. "This week is the week we will get answers."

Students wrote down their questions and stuffed them in a box yesterday, today those questions will be incorporated into a single letter and presented the administration. The administration will have until Friday to answer the each question, after which students have threatened to take their protest indoors and stage sit-ins in the President's, Provost, and Governor's Offices.

"All of your questions are not going to get answered because the administrators don't know the answers," said SGA President Phillip Agnew, who has called for an Emergency BOT to discuss students concerns.

"If she doesn't know, then that's a problem," Washington one of the demonstrations leaders.

  2. I don't think this administration will take us seriously, its time to take it to the state.

  3. I know Governor Crist is not happy about what is going on at the law school. Many of the students worked for his campaign and have briefed him about the issues. Plus, he has a good relationship with Dr. H and will get the real deal.

  4. Speaking of the law school. It's a shame that the provisional period is about to end, and we have yet to get our law school fully accredited. I can't believe nobody is thinking forward instead of backwards. Instead of going for full accredidation they are tryin to get an extension granted to them. I need to get intouch with Mr. Alvin Bryant over NAA and Senator Al Lawson its time to make this incompetent administration accountable for their actions.

  5. 11:24, what are you talking about, "taking it to the state"??? Take what to "the state"? Hell, the state already has whatever it is you're talking about taking to them. Have you not been reading the papers and listening to the news or even reading this blog? Jesus Christ. What about we just "take you to the state" and leave you there?

    1. ???
    2. Total Chaos, that is what.
    3. Friends left b/c when Witherspoon took over as the interim Dean, she and he always had disagreements and she had it out for him b/c of him sleeping around with the faculty
    4. This plan has been talked about "undercover" for 2 years. I've never heard a definate plan, but it's always hush-hush.
    5. Nil, however, the last ABA site team was VERY disgusted. Teachers late to class, plagiarism, late fin-aid checks, no new hirings, etc.
    6. ABA complained about the clinicals, said they gave students too many class credits for such little work. Some clinics like Street Law were B.S. and had to be cut.
    7. Do you mean a weekly newspaper? It's called RattlerLink, and it is written by dummies, trust us.
    8. Blame it on having no faculty and everyone waiting until the last minute. Also, professors fight over the same courses each semester to figure out who is the BOSS, then they come up with these dumb electives last minute.
    9. ??? Ask Carleen Thompson and Eddie Paramore. They are totally USELESS! They send out mass spam emails about jobs in other states or jobs that require "5 years experience" to students. Now how are we going to apply to those? DUH?
    10. I know!
    11. ASk Diva Lundy Langston and her crew, they scare all the newbies off and refuse to hire anyone more qualified than them out of fear of being outshined!
    12. Budget problems, Witherspoon was trying but had too much on her plate, poor lady.

  10. You sound like a bitter student. Stop writing on this blog and start studying for the bar. You stand a good chance of failing given your inability to spell. Also, look up the definition of libel. Stop spreading false charges about the personal and professional lives of our wonderful faculty and staff.

  11. No wonder the law school is in a world of hurt. Is any other student finding it impossible to get an appointment to see anyone about anything? What happened to the open door policy?

  12. This is not a student. Trust me. That was written by a bitter professor whose first name begins with J.

Give me a BREAK. This is an anonymous blog. My identity is safe. Also this is a forum to spread information, so if you are scared then stop screwing off yourself. How can I study for the bar when my fin-aid check is 2 months late and I can't pay for my living expenses? Some of us live off student aid while attending school. Never had a problem at FSU with my dorm money.

  15. Wow, you even have law professors coming on this blog and makin believe they iz students to spread crap about their co-worker professors? THAT SAD! Geez I should stay in Tallahassee cuz I don't wanna be around you folks who are stabbin' each others in the back and waitin up in the cut to cutta fool!

  16. The State of Florida is NOT a friend of FAMU. I must repeat myself:
This is going to take more than an e-mail campaign. RATTLERS need to check the history of CRIST and FAMU. Senator Charlie Crist (as part of the Education Committee) voted against the bill for FAMU Law School. Mr. Crist responded "That sounds like a pretty good opportunity to me" when Chancellor Charlie Reed stated to 50% of black applicants to UF and FSU law schools are accepted. Unfortunately, as Mr. Crist was aware the applicants were in low numbers, resulting in less opportunities for blacks. Mr. Crist does not support the mandate of the law school, or of FAMU, for that matter.

I am reminded of the words of James Baldwin in 1960 after visiting FAMU: "Until now the Negro college president's usefullness to the students, to the Negro community and to the state was determined by the number of alternatives to equality that he could produce out of the Southern hat. The docility of the students was the tacit price agreed upon for more funds, new buildings, more land. And these were tangible alternatives, for these things were hideously needed. As for curricular expansion, it usually came about in order to contain the discontent of the negro students."

WE HAVE BEEN DOCILE and HAVE NOT RECEIVED GOOD RESULTS.

We need to listen to those who struggled before us. THEY WERE NOT DOCILE. Martin Luther King, Jr. was not DOCILE. Rosa Parks was not DOCILE. OLIVER R. MAXEY was not DOCILE. VIRGIL D. HAWKINS was not DOCILE.

IT IS TIME TO GET MOVING RATTLERS!!! WE HAVE BEEN EDUCATED FOR THIS PURPOSE...TO SAVE OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

This is a total misrepresentation of “The Law Dawg” and the people mentioned in the posting….This is now cause for legal action. For you 1L & 2L's this is called defamation and slander. He knows how to write a compelling complaint and will get damages!!!!!

If you think that you will not be found out, think again!!!! You are ignorant stupid and dumb!!!! Watch what you type and who said you typed it!!!!! Things get back those who you type about...

Here is another thing…Professor and Administrators read this page don’t slip up and let them find out…

Don’t be a coward, don’t be a punk, and don’t be C.A.T.!!!!!!!! If you are tough enough to say shit…then be man or woman enough to own up to it !!!!!

Ghost of truth…Ghost of lies !!!!!!!!!

Don’t use the name or link again !!!!!!!! Unlike your C.A.T ass the "The Law Dawg" is loyal to FAMU, The FAMU College of Law, The Students, Faculty and Alumni who care about what goes on !!!!!!!

  19. 1. Who will take over as provost?
(Debra Austin is the provost of the University and not going anywhere. Now if you mean Dean of the Law School then that is up the powers that be on main campus. Who is made permanent, they will guide the law school to where it needs to be)

    2. What is going on at the law school? (The law school is moving along like it should. A law school that was closed for 32 years is going to have bumps and stumbling blocks, but it is the long run that matters)

    3. Why did we let Professor Friends leave the law school? His contacts, experience, and leadership were invaluable. He kept the trains running on time.

(It was Dean Friends and he was an interim Dean. He was visiting professor when came in the fall of 2003. He has moved on is back in private practice. Unfortunately he is not the first member of the faculty to leave and he will not be the last. It is change...live with it...)

    4. Is there a secret plan to hand off the law school to UCF?

(No, check the bill that gave FAMU life again)

    5. What is the status of ABA approval?

(For those who need to know this….. November 2007 is the first time that the College of Law is eligible for "Full Accreditation". The school received “provisional accreditation” in November 2004. A law school must be open for a full 5 years before it can receive that approval. The College of Law will be open 5 full years in August 2007…That is the first they can even apply for it. Check the ABA web site so you will have your facts together.)

    6. Why is there an effort to change the clinical program when it is fine as it is?
(The clinical program is always in need of change)

    7. Why is there no paper at the law school?

(There was a paper at the law school the first three years. It was run by students, funded by a student, no help from SBA, ATLA, WLC or BLSA. Everyone wrote for the paper...when that student graduated no other student wanted to pick up and run with it...So guess what it died!!! Get off your butt and create one!!! There are alumni in Orlando that would be willing to help with money to get the paper up and running again. !!!!!

    8. When will we know the fall schedule? Why do we have to play this game every year where we are told about class offerings at the last minute?

(You have no idea how many people are coming back or will be admitted, do you? When the Dean's office knows you will know...)

    9. How long do we intend to be the only law school in Florida without a placement office? Students need jobs!

(The first two years of the law school there was not anyone in that position. and the students found jobs and internships. Here is a factoid for you 93% of the first class had jobs 6 months after graduation....96% had jobs 9 months after graduation. You don’t need to wait on anyone to find the job for you. www.NALP.com get on there and find a job or internship !!!!!!!

    10. Academic support. Please just hire someone.

(Do they need to, yes, Have they no. Again during the first two years of the law school there was no one in that position. Students had an "Us" against the rest of the legal community attitude". Academic support would have been nice, but they knew they had to do the work"....

    11. Why are we not hiring any new faculty?

(On that one, call main campus. The College of Law can't hire anyone with out approval from the main campus. The Deans want new faculty, you should ask why the president does not want it?)

    12. Why did the trip to D.C. to view a Supreme Court case get cancelled?

(Again call main campus...they hold the purse string. Not the Deans at the law school)

The sad part about all of this is that all of this information is right under your nose. If quit gossiping and ask real questions with out showing your ass, you will find out. Lawyers and lawyers to be talk too much and don’t listen enough…Quit bitchin’ and work to make FAMU better!!!!

  20. HAHAHAHAH, loser. Defamation and slander. Buy a BARBRI book. D.R. would be disappointed in knowing you don't know the elements to either. Well, then again, I imagine he didn't know the elements.

As for the identity of J? Idiot, it is too vague to even have standing. Yet again, R.A. would be disappointed that you don't even know standing.

You must not be in our wopping 56% bar pass rate.

As for BLSA, it is NBLSA. I hate the ignorant dumbasses who keep spelling in BLSA. I have been a member and will continue.

I comment on J because I am sick of people being two faced. If we want this school to be black, make it black. End of story. I am tired of his secrete conspiracy theories and running around as if the world revolves around him and the school.

By our own incompetance, we have demonstrated to the world that we can't manage our own funds, program, or admittance. Hell, we can't even have a dean that lasts more than a year.

I am embarrassed, I should have gone to Howard. At least they remember who we are.

Ghost of Lies? Ha. We will see what happens in August when the school comes up for review again. I am glad the Bar is in July.

Signed: C.A.T. ass. (Ghost of Truth)

  21. Let me help you with something…the fight that you trying to make has already been fought…Students in the first two years, argued with the administration and faculty, yelled classmates, screamed to the top of their lungs and cried because we could not understand why were there so many students who did not look like us.

Why had FAMU sold us out? There were white students who looked at us and told us “we” didn’t belong at FAMU!!! What the fuck????? This went on for two plus years and I bet it is still going on right now…
They didn’t want to know about FAMU, they didn’t want know about the history of FAMU college of law…They didn’t want to know shit!!!!! That pissed us off.
They didn’t want to go to Tallahassee for graduation, they did not want student organizations on campus like BLSA (I will explain that to you later)...they made threats to the dean, they threaten to walk out (several white students did walk out of a con-law class during a discussion about slavery), boycotting black professors, petitions to have new sections added so a white professor could teach a subject, accusations that black professors took it easy on black students, over crowded class rooms, there was so much shit that went on at the location on Orange Ave…most people would not lasted a semester because of this bullshit…
Let me help with something no law school is going to all BLACK. As much as FAMU would like to have this it aint going to happen Not in 2002 when it opened not in 2007-2008..White students and others go FAMU and other HBCU schools that have law school because they cant get in to UF, FSU, Stetson..Etc. It goes on at TSU which is over 40% Hispanic because they can’t get in at U of H…Howard is less that 50% black because they can’t get into American or Georgetown…NCCU is less than 35% black because they can’t get into Duke…Southern University is less than 41% black because they cant get into LSU... Some of the first year students want to leave and go some place else, but they stuck it out. Get over this shit about being it being black…you can’t convert people into FAMUAN’S if they don’t want to be. Focus on the people who really give a FUCK and let those other people do what they not doing!!!! The white students who vilified FAMU and got there degrees from there are still going to have to put the shit on their resumes!!!!

Now to your comments about conspiracy theories…..You think that some of the professors have conspiracy theories…You show know the bullshit that they face…The young professors that there are there by choice because they want to help students become good lawyers. But the bullshit that main campus takes them through is dead wrong. Most of them could go into private practice and make 5X as much or more than what FAMU pays them….but they are there for you and those who give a damn about the law.

Now I am going to tell you if you think a professor is two faced and you think the person is suspect…then you need to go and talk to them…Shut the door and speak you mind…Ask the questions you want to know...Be real but not disrespectful !!!! I promise you that your mind will change. Don't get me wrong some of them who have been there have been wrong for FAMU...but the majority, the vast majority need to be there....

There are people who to close FAMU, the same kind of people who closed it in 68…and took our books and materials over FSU....Don’t let that shit happen.

Now as far as BLSA goes…There were white students who openly called the black students militant Negroes, we need to be on a plantation picking cotton, there was no need for a black organization on black campus??? Again we were like what the fuck????? Are you serious? Do you know about BLSA?

Students had to fight for that shit…There was plan by a bunch of them to join BLSA…and take it over and shut it down. We had to fight there asses tooth and nail to keep it open. And there were so called house Negroes that were going along with this bullshit.

Look with all being said do something to fix the problem. When Florida Costal was established they went through the same problems that FAMU is going through…Their bar scores were low, the same thing for Barry, hell there bar scores were in the 40th percentile. FAMU by measurement is doing better than the both of them in their first 5 years.

FAMU will be good, but only the people who care…

    Courage Aspiration & Truth…

    From those who expiernced it

  22. Hey ^^^^^ You wrote:

The white students who vilified FAMU and got there degrees from there are still going to have to put the shit on their resumes!!!!

EXACTLY! It is SHIT on their resumes! At least we agree on something.

Don't kid yourself, a law school has to have this thing called standards, and since the students with better LSAT scores and undergrad GPAs were also white, asian, and hispanic, that means that a part of your school can't be all black. Stop crying about it. Not to mention that anyone who was black was given a more than fair chance at getting in, because the school kept their standards so low to admit all the blacks they could. The average LSAT score for a FAMU COL student is the lowest in the NATION, go look it up on U.S. News. 136 is a joke. No wonder why there is only a 56% pass rate!

And you have admitted that ya'll screamed when you saw white students in your hallways. If you want to be treated equally, then you have to treat others the way you want to be treated. Stop being so anti-white. You only hurt yourselves in the long run.

Obviously any non-blacks who started at the law school were OK with diversity and having a school with a large percentage of blacks. All you've done is changed the minds of a lot of intelligent whites who were progressive and were accepting of all nationalities and made them think twice about what it means to be in harmony with us.

You have ruined the TRUE meaning of the rebirth of the law school -- to rub it in the face of all those Jim Crow retards in Tallahassee and show that FAMU will live on in the new era, racially diverse and productive.

You've only destroyed everything we've worked for.

  27. Stop. Please just stop. There must be more to life than character assassination and threats. The next time you feel the need to write something negative on this blog take a minute and write an e-mail to an old friend instead. You get what you give. The universe is based on karma. Wonder why things have not gone well for you lately? Somewhere you did something negative and it came back to you. It always does. The longer it takes to come back the worse it will be. Time spent on this blog equals MPRE failure and bar failure. Think about it.
