FAMU has canceled recently signed broadcast contract with the Black College Sports Network, a division of Jericho Broadcast Networks, Inc.
BCSN had planned to manage and operate the Rattler Sports Network and be responsible for over air and internet broadcasts of all FAMU Sports. The contract was canceled because a principal owner of Jericho is employed by the FAMU IT Department and works on the webteam.
Jericho's relationship with FAMU started two years ago with the webcasting of the Rattlers' football games. JBN claims as many as 700 Internet viewers watched those games live and another 1,500 connected afterward. Jericho had expected to significantly increase those numbers this year, but didn't say how this would be done.
Jericho's contract called for them to "receive the first $70,000 (in Cash) of all revenues generated by its media efforts both Advertising & Broadcast. After that all revenues will be split 50/50 between JBN & Florida A&M University."
A couple of the "deliverables" from the contract called for:
• Global broadcast of all programs over internet broadcast services
• BCSN will develop and setup “Viewing Stations” in a minimum of 21 cities over three years
• FAMU will facilitate marketing meetings with potential national advertisers
• Coaches show production for every head coach once a week based on season
• Development and production of “Rattler Sports Nation” weekly FAMU update program
• Feature on each sports program
• Development and production of a sports marketing video presentation
• Recruiting video developed for each sport

When university officials hired Roy Eavins, II, principal owner of Jericho Broadcast Network, to broadcast the games, he was already employed at the university, so it's not as if they did not know and have this information at hand prior, during, and after hiring him. I mean, this surely was not a secret. It has to be more to this story than what is being reported here.

ReplyDeleteNot a lawyer but were there any:
Disclosure Clauses?
Termination Clauses?
In the event of no revenue clauses?
I hope another contract with another company is in the works.
ReplyDeleteOK ...
ReplyDeleteSo now that the School has terminated this Contract ...
What kind of deal will the School be operating under NOW?
Absolutely shady. I agree with 8/21 @ 12:27. If it was approved by Atheltics and the General Counsel's Office (and EIT), then things should have been in order. If the University (namely EIT) knew the owner was employed, what pull the rug from under him AFTER the deal went through. With all the stuff that EIT is doing right now, I would think that they would welcome any value-add service (that is giving back to the University) into the fold. Sounds like someone in EIT bitter from too much HATER-AID!!
ReplyDeleteI know Roy Eavins and have known Roy Eavins for a very, very long time. I know that he absolutely loves the university, and is one of those guys who couldn't wait to give back to the university and be a part of the institution. I know that whatever decisions have been made regarding Jericho Broadcasting were done in good faith from his end. I know this. Now, whatever contract problems arose from his affiliation with FAMU more than likely are probably a result of some "technical errors" made by the university, not Mr. Eavins. I don't know if he has an attorney to review the legal aspects of the deal, but I hope he comes out on top of this. The university needs to shore up on the business side of doing things. How can you give and taketh away in one fell swoop?
ReplyDeleteMove those Chains?
ReplyDeleteFamu athletics have not been the same since Mr. Martin left. He had more sponsors and radio call in-show and radio staions throughout the entire state. If you ask me the need to bring him back...
ReplyDeleteWell personally I'm like Obama-- It's time for a change. Here you have a company that is offering a better contract like ISP and Host communications that is wanting to enter upon a revenue sharing agreement (Sharing a percent of what it makes to give to FAMU Athletics) but this other company because of there ties to the University, get the contract and (Athletics pays Them 60k)...it's not right...Plus a fact I don't know about U but I get tied hearing all those shoutouts. I would rather hear about the game stats, trivia, any on air promotions, activities on campus, and alumni happenings not a plug for free food and the haircut hookups.
ReplyDeleteYowsa. ^^
ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't have this problem if he was here.

May seem like a good deal, but it's REALLY NOT!
ReplyDeleteWould this deal work for your business...I think not.
ReplyDeleteBut wasn't his Jericho supposed to be producing some things last season taht never turned out right??????
ReplyDelete8/21/2008 9:33 AM and 8/21/2008 6:21 PM:
ReplyDeleteFAMU is now partnered with ISP sports. So that's the new deal that Rattler athletics will be operating under.
Shouldn't Avery Mcknight had picked up on this legal issue?
ReplyDeleteThis situation just doesn't pass the smell test. The first thing a potential employee of any business is asked --whether on application paper or verbally -- is "Where are you employed?" or "Are you employed" -- usually the latter question is asked first -- Hello? If the prospective applicant's answer is "Yes, I'm employed," then the next question is "Where?" Now, if that prospective empoyee says, "Here," well, then, hello??
ReplyDeleteNaw, I'm sorry I ain' feelin' this, even though Mr. Eavins has released a statement to the Tallahassee Democrat in explanation thereof.
The contract is null & void. What more do you people want? Hell, lets move on.
ReplyDelete^^
ReplyDelete2:28, you're probably one of those folks that do things half-a**.
What's wrong with people having a dialogue here? If you're in such a hurry to move on, move the hell on. No one cares what you do. Ok?
I know that's right 9:19. That's how they want to operate. They want to jack stuff up, and then tell people to move on. Naw, dammit. Let's talk about this mess so that we can prevent it from happening ago. Otherwise, move the hell on back to where you came here from anyway.
