The FAMU track program continues its Bill Hayes induced free fall, as another state champ signee is looking to leave.
Marissa McElveen, Florida’s 3A triple jump champion, wants out of her letter of intent to run for the Lady Rattlers next year. Her decision comes in the aftermath of FAMU’s decision to fire women’s coach Maicel Malone.
The recent dismissal of men’s head coach Rey Robinson also triggered a similar shake-up. Tony McQuay, the state’s 2A 400-meter dash champion, is now looking to run for Florida State instead of FAMU.
Like McQuay, McElveen was recruited by many other Division I programs. She has filed the required paperwork to end her commitment with FAMU and is weighing her numerous options.
A savvy AD, which Hayes obviously is not, would have timed the coaches departure better, and personally contacted recruits to massage their fears.
BILL HAYES MUST GO NOW!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteVery true! I won't attack the STUDENT athlete, these things happen and should have been explained to the recruits. Other than that, its still hip to be Black if you're the token. And entitlement is still the "American" way. Also we can't assume that there is ANY sort of loyalty anywhere, things and people aren't always what and who they appear to be.
ReplyDeleteBill Hayes needs to go. He has further demoralized a struggling athletic department. You cannot ask coaches to field competitive teams without giving them the basics. Ask the non-football and basketball coaches if they are working with a full complement of scholarships? The answer is no. Ask them about travel schedules and support for sports other than football and basketball. Hayes is trying to run-off the womens volleyball coach which has been the most successful program in the 21st century at FAMU.
ReplyDeleteAsk Bill Hayes how many new dollars he has raised. Not reshuffling of booster dollars. The worst mistake for an athletic program is to hire a former football coach as AD. They think only one sport exists, football.
I remember when FAMU's track team was beating up folks in the MEAC, it was not so long ago. Now we are at the bottom. Same coach, but different leadership that does not support his teams.
Get rid of Bill Hayes and get us some inspired leadership in athletics. Here we have a brand new athletic convocation center. What kinds of naming rights have we given to the various rooms in that facility? Media room, locker room. We have some FAMUans who have some dollars that could give $50000 to name a room. Has anyone asked? Does Bill Hayes even know 10 alumni to even ask?
Every time I see him, he has his nose up someone's a@# from North Carolina. I think he forgets he works at FAMU. We need inspired, committed leadership at FAMU. I AM SICK AND TIRED OF THE SHIGGITY!!! Yes, I am a booster and more than the lowest level. I pay so I can talk loudly about the foolishness we call athletics. Let's start a petition to fire Bill Hayes!!!!
Petition, GOING!
ReplyDeleteI must ask each of you a serious question, "What is the Actual problem at FAMU, Is it the coaches or is it the AD?" I have seen many programs succeed even when the AD sucks and I have seen programs do well even when the head coaches suck. Instead of pointing blame on each other why not get to the root of the problem. If it is financial, lets figure out a way to get the finances necessary. Yes we are a proud HBCU but I strongly believe it is time for us to stop classifying ourselves as the best HBCU and look to do things that will make us the best University period. If the Athletic department does not want or have the money to fund the sport, let go out and find the money. As educated black folk it is our duty to stop with the excuses and do everything we can to support the program. Lets sit down and allow the people who really want to invest there time and efforts in the track program do just that. Lets get some serious vision. Does anyone have a plan? If so, lets open up a live forum to get this thing turned around. I say this as a coach, former FAMU athlete and a proud supporter of FAMU.
