Homecoming concert line up draws students ire

A small group of FAMU students are voicing their distaste for the university's homecoming lineup, including one rapper who goes by Gucci Mane who won't be able to make the concert because of legal issues.
Members of, the ad hoc, FAMU People's Coalition say the concert's artists are not a representation of the diverse student body and say they don't agree with the derogatory and often violent lyrics.
"It seems that they have artists that only cater to a certain audience. And the thing about that is, the material that these artists have are simply not bringing the sort of message that we think are healthy for our university environment," says Sean Blackmon.
Member say they hope to have a thousand signatures by Thursday when they'll meet up with university and homecoming officials.
The group says they don't want to change the concert but do want an alternative solution offered to the students.
Some of the confirmed artists are: Plies, Lil Webbie, Young Cash, Ace Hood, Hurricane Chris, Ice Berg, Black Dada, Dukwon and Midget Mac.
Gucci Mane was to be the concert's headliner, but won't be able to make the concert because he'll be at a court hearing.
Gucci Mane has also already been banned from performing at North Carolina A&T homecoming this year.

I'm proud of our students for taking this stand !
ReplyDeleteGoooooooo Rattlers !!!!
with that concert lineup, make sure you bring your bulletproof vest
ReplyDeleteWe are asking individuals who apart of the FAMU family who agree with this stand (or just want more information) to visit the blogspot: http://petitionfamuconcert.blogspot.com/ that fully outlines the platform on which we stand and provides a through reasoning as to why the artists slated to perform are not a true representation of the universities mission statement. Also, you can log on to Facebook and join the group 'You Call That A Concert?' to sign the online petition that is continually growing. Thank you Rattlernation for your support!
ReplyDeleteWay to go students!!! You make me proud to be a Rattler today.
ReplyDeleteYou all deserve so much more and I'm happy you are starting to demand it. Now go forth and don't accpet BS response from those who think they have the power!
This is the kind of student leadership that will make me go broke trying to support.
ReplyDeleteThe university asked student via the SACS QEP Plan - Enhancing Critical Thinking, to think and act more critically and the students are answering the call!!
Gooo Rattlers!!!!!!!!!
what happened to Monica?
ReplyDeletewhy does the website list Jazmine Sullivane?
This is precisely the reason that I didn't go to a single homecoming concert while I was in school. The concert planners always bring in a bunch of rappers. They don't seem to realize that some students don't want to hear profanity-laden lyrics all night long. How about some R&B or Jazz artists as well? I applaud those taking a stand against this.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Is it true that they've only sold 700 concert tickets?
I luuuuuv to see our students take a stand ,like true RATTLERS!!
ReplyDeleteIt's time for HBCU students to assume responsibility for their generation. They have let the street element lead for too long. Congratulations to A&T students who first removed Mr. Gucci Mane from their concert lineup and to our beloved RATTLERS who picked up the mantle!
10:00am: As of right now Monica is still on the Bill to perform and Jazime Sullivan is one of the many suggested (and available) artists that would better represent the university (in accordance with its mission statement) at our Homecoming Concert.
ReplyDeleteIt is my personal opinion that Monica will pull out of the concert before its all said and done; especially if the ticket sales are as low as 10:41 has brought into question. But, this is about more than just music, it speaks to how concerned the university and student officials are with adequately representing the institution during a time when hundreds of potential FAMU students, parents, and supporters are in Tallahassee to take part in our storied and glorious Homecoming tradition.
If Jazzmine Sullivan is performing, I will need two tickets to the HC comcert
ReplyDeleteSay No To Gucci Mane & the rest of these low life, dangerous, no good, worthless failures.
ReplyDeleteThank you FAMU students. I'm very proud of you for taking a stand and saving our university from another potential tragedy. My whole family will be in town and I will not feel safe if the likes of Gucci Mane is lurking in the dark.
This is great news! I applaud the effort, though the timing and method may be askew. Back when I was on campus, there was the same sentiment. It's strange too because SGA and most students opposed the selections and hardly listened to those artists in question. They'd usually get sales because of one in the lineup (whether they all showed is another topic). We had other concerts to attend though. Lately the object has been to fill up the civic center with as many fsu students, locals, and visitors as possible. Also, the rappers are often the commercial artists who are available and affordable with minimal planning. Who knows, perhaps the real musicians and bands will begin to be requested. People who can truly perform live and do covers without a track playing in the back. If we really did our concert right, the series would look like the Essence festival or better. Go Rattlers. Seek more musically talented and relevant artists of the day (they're not all gonna be under 21 either). Run with the fads and soon they'll appear lame. There is talent out there with the WOW factor to boot.
ReplyDeleteCall Common aka Common Sense aka Lonnie Rasheed Lynn if you really like RAP! He has great music, a real vocabulary, real connections and is blowin up as a real actor now! He's a FAMUan too!
ReplyDeleteI'm so proud of our young rattlers for rejecting filth. Let the Thug conference perform elsewhere. Its about time we reject this filth.
ReplyDeleteThank you young Rattlers. My check is in the mail.
Thug Conference Lineup:
ReplyDeleteGucci Mane, Plies, Lil Webbie, Young Cash, Ace Hood, Hurricane Chris, Ice Berg, Black Dada, Dukwon and Midget Mac.
This is an accident waiting to happen.
LOL...look at all the self rightous folk on RN talking against the HC concert line up...wow...could these be the same people who scream and shout in glee when the Marching 100 performs the very songs that is the music of these so called "thugs"? ( Now watch all the liars show up on RN and say no not me...)
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that we need to diversify our scoope of vision, I know that we as a people do not need to implore the same tactics that were/are used against us as a whole, in order to obtain this end. I am a FAMU student, but to any white person I could be and am sure that I am casted simply as a thug and some (many if you read the comments on the Dixiecrat)would say that the fact that I attend FAMU proves that I am a thug. This logic is flawed I know, yet it still exists.
Lets look at the ignorant statments of 9:14am...How many times in the past five years has anyone needed a bulletproof vest at a FAMU HC Concert? None!
or 11:59am..."Say No To Gucci Mane & the rest of these low life, dangerous, no good, worthless failures." Really, low life? worthless? These are not very Christian thoughts about somebodys children, I would think, yet somehow we can think that this vile ignorance is okay becasue we do not like someones musical stylings? There is a lot of things that need help at FAMU I know, and while people disagree lets remember that we should be civil.
2:02pm
ReplyDeleteObviously, the posters are not condescending to FAMU students. It's the unwanted elements these types of so-called artists attract which reflect negatively on the FAMU brand.
Many are beginning to reject this filth. The train is leaving the station for good.
Could you expand on what you mean by unwanted elements?
ReplyDelete3:45pm Simply being Black reflects negatively on the FAMU "brand" (seriously FAMU brand) to some people. So, given that logic should FAMU students based on the "brand" argument say, hey lets merge with FSU? In the eyes of white America and some sold out Blacks that would be a good thing for the FAMU "brand".
ReplyDeleteIf you want to make an argument about the music people will argue, now if you want to have a discussion based on the merits of your postition then we as a people can have change. You, clearly have not chosen the latter.Your choice of words: elements, filth, so-called artist etc. are unbecoming of a civil conversation on the matter.
The students at FAMU are easily lead and mislead and it is unfortunate that this is a prime example. The HC Concert line up has been out for over three and a half months. The Band has been playing the music for all to hear, I mean the crowd of students sing and dance along,so the motive in this case is suspect.I will bet a dollar to a dime that after HC this matter will be a dead issue and no one will be saying on RN Blog I demand a seat at the table for next years HC planning committee and I have a PLAN!
3:45pm.
ReplyDeleteIt's ok to have the Thug Conference. However, FAMU should remove its endorsement and/or disassociate itself from the concert as North Carolina A&T has done. Other University will soon follow.
Its been proven that whenvever juveniles, teenagers and imature adults congregate in large numbers without adult supervision, its an accident waiting to happen.
Just watch the local news following the concert as they bask in negativity. I'll be here waiting to tell you "I TOLD YOU SO".
I JUST DON'T WANT ANYONE TO GET HURT
3:56 PM
ReplyDelete"Could you expand on what you mean by unwanted elements?"
Drugs, violence, underage drinking, guns, vandalism, ignorance, shame, thugs, hooligans etc...,
With only 400 tickets sold and the concert promoter/student chair arrested last week, I think FAMU SGA needs to make better decisions! I guess that's $150K down the toilet!
ReplyDelete"Only 400 tickets sold"
ReplyDeleteAs I stated in a previous post, "Peolple are beginning to reject this filth." What enlighted person would care to be associated with the elements this filth attracts?
It is evident, the bottom tenth is slowly losing its grip on the African American Community.
Who really wants to be Ghetto or Hood? How can you help the hood if you're trapped in it?
Its past time we STOP selling this BullSh$t to our children.
