On Wednesday, Home Depot announced that FAMU won a $10,000 grant in its “Retool Your School” competition.FAMU competed in a field of 57 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) across the nation. It was one of ten that won a $10,000 minor grant. The others were: Bluefield State College, Fisk University, Hampton University, Howard University, Mississippi Valley State University, Morgan State University, Tuskegee University, Virginia Union University and Wilberforce University.
Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina took the top prize, a $50,000 grant.
FAMU plans to use its grant to install cisterns for catching rainwater off campus buildings and diverting it to water the grounds near the women’s dormitories. The project will be completed during fall semester 2010.
Great job students. Rattlers, there's something to be said about voting and our network of communication. This isn't the first online poll or contest where we should have won. We have gotta do better, especially when its not costing anything. geez
ReplyDeleteI am a member of the team that applied for the Retool Your School grant from FAMU. While we truly appreciate the $10,000 award, we believe FAMU actually won the 1st-place $50,000 prize when the contest was supposed to end ... on May 3. On May 6, Home Depot decided to do two things that were game changers: post the vote tallies online and extend the competition to May 15. As of 4 p.m., May 6, FAMU was in 1st place by 400 votes, with Tuskegee in 2nd. By 5:12 p.m., however, Elizabeth City State University, which has 2,500 students and had been in 3rd place, registered 4,387 more votes and leapfrogged into 1st place by 2,200 votes. And the vote discrepancy kept growing until the new end on May 15. We have asked Home Depot -- twice -- for clarification and to do the right thing by awarding FAMU $50,000 as well. But HD has chosen not to respond yet. We're still waiting ... .
