FAMU trustees ignored the Sentinel’s Sunday editorial that
called for President James H. Ammons’ departure. On Monday, the board agreed to
let him chart the path for restructuring the Marching 100.
“Trustees didn't even challenge Ammons when he dumped
responsibility for the ineligible members on ex-band director Julian White, who
quit under pressure last week,” the editorial board wrote in a follow-up piece
on Tuesday. “Does the buck not stop with the president at FAMU?”
The Orlando Sentinel’s refusal to demand the resignation of University of
Central Florida (UCF) President John Hitt for the death of football player Ereck
Plancher should help it answer this question.
Plancher died while under the supervision
of an athletics program that has had many years of scandals that show a lack of
administrative control. A jury found UCF negligent and ordered the university’s
athletic association to pay $10M.
Rattlers have no reason to take the Orlando Sentinel
editorial board seriously as long as it holds the UCF president to a different
standard than the FAMU president.
