FAMU’s much-anticipated 2014 home opening football game proved a heartbreaking disappointment on Saturday, as the Rattlers fell to nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina University (CCU), 48-3 at Bragg Memorial Stadium.

FAMU (0-3) took the opening kickoff 49 yards in eight plays before senior Chase Varnadore booted a 42-yard field goal to stake his club to a 3-0 lead with 11:20 left in the first quarter. But the fifth-ranked (FCS) Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina (4-0) showed why they have been riding high in the national polls, taking the ensuing kickoff 65 yards in just five plays, capped by a 25-yard scoring strike from Alex Ross to John Israel for a 7-3 lead with 9:00 left.

De’Angelo Henderson extended the CCU lead to 14-3 on his 13-yard run which came shortly after a blocked punt with 2:58 left in the quarter, before Calvin Hollenhorst scooped a Damien Fleming fumble and ran in from four yards out for a 21-3 Coastal lead at the end of the first period.

The Chaticleers tacked on 10 points in the second period to forge a 31-3 lead at the half, then in the third period got scoring runs of two yards by Henderson and 13 yards on a scramble by Ross to push their cushion to 45-3.

CCU placekicker Alex Catron closed the scoring with a school-record 51-yard field goal with 6:00 left in the game.
