On a warm Friday afternoon in the Mississippi Delta, the FAMU Rattlers’ softball team didn’t just beat Mississippi Valley State. They delivered a masterclass in offensive firepower and pitching precision, sweeping the Delta Devilettes in a pair of run-rule routs — 19-2 and 12-1 — that left little doubt about who rules the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Across two five-inning contests, the Rattlers (25-17, 14-2 SWAC) outscored their hosts 31-3, collecting 30 hits and drawing 13 walks in a display of relentless, top-to-bottom execution. For a program surging toward postseason positioning, Friday’s doubleheader was less a test and more an exhibition.
“When we’re locked in like that, it’s contagious,” said head coach Brittany Beal postgame. “One through nine, everyone came to hit today. We put pressure on from the first pitch and never let up.”
If there was any suspense, it evaporated quickly.
FAMU sent 12 batters to the plate in a four-run first inning and never looked back. By the time the fourth inning rolled around, the Rattlers had tacked on eight more runs — turning what began as a conference matchup into a full-scale hitting clinic.
Leading the charge was junior infielder Amari Brown, who put together a career day at the plate: 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, and six RBIs. Her two-run shot to right-center in the second inning punctuated an already commanding start.
“I was just seeing the ball well,” Brown said modestly. “We knew we had to set the tone early on the road, and everyone did their job.”
She wasn’t alone. Samantha Smith launched a two-run homer in the fourth, part of a 2-for-4, four-RBI performance. Even from the bottom of the order, Madison Jenkins went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
In the circle, Zoryana Hughes (11-4) handled business efficiently, going three innings before handing the ball to Sariah Espada, who shut the door with two scoreless frames.
If the Devilettes hoped for respite in the nightcap, they were sorely mistaken.
FAMU sent 15 batters to the plate in a staggering 11-run first inning — a frame so relentless that Mississippi Valley burned through two pitchers before recording the third out.
Neriah Lee delivered the crushing blow: a bases-clearing double that blew the game wide open. Makayla Register added a solo homer in the second, part of a 2-for-3 day that included a triple.
“We came out with the same energy,” Register said. “We knew we couldn’t get comfortable. This team feeds off momentum.”
Sariah Espada (2-2) took full advantage of the run support, tossing a complete-game five-hitter with five strikeouts and just one walk, cementing the sweep with poise and power.
With the wins, FAMU extends its SWAC winning streak to seven games and maintains a firm grip on first place in the conference. The Rattlers have outscored league opponents 50-10 during that stretch — a testament to both their explosive offense and stifling pitching.
“We’re playing our best ball at the right time,” Beal added. “But we know there’s more work to do. This is just one step.”
Indeed, with the SWAC tournament looming, performances like Friday’s send a clear message: the Rattlers aren’t just winning. They’re dominating.
And they’re just getting started.
While the softball team was securing a road victory against MVSU, the baseball team defended their home field at Moore-Kittles, holding off a determined MVSU squad 6–5 in the opening game of a three-game series.
