In the spirit of Black history month, we thought we'd take a moment to share some interesting facts about Florida A&M.
Founded: October 3, 1887 as the State Normal College for Colored Students
+ became a Land grant university four years later when it recieved $7,500 under the Second Morrill Act and its name was changed to the State Normal and Industrial College for Colored Students
+ became an official institution of higher learning in 1905 as a result of the Buckman Act, which transferred control of the University from the Board of Education to the Board of Control
+ in 1909, the name of the college was once again changed to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes
+ in 1953 the name was finally changed to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.
