Forty FAMU students participated in an "Alternative Spring Break" called "Katrina on the Ground" last week by helping to rebuild areas ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. FAMU students teamed up with college students from across America by helping to restore lives in Mobile (AL), Biloxi (MS), and New Orleans.
Once students reached New Orleans they were shocked to see houses with roofs shattered into pieces and thousands of abandon cars.
Students received detailed instruction on before beginning the clean up process, and some were given full body suits, mouth and eye protectors.
Students described the works as "an emotional experience".
In the final days a wrap-up session was held at Xavier University, allowing students to reflect on their experience.
