Fifty years after the Tallahassee Bus Boycott, and with students facing some of the highest gas prices this nation has seen, RN has learned that FAMU Vice President of Students Affairs Vincent June has decided against, the wishes of SGA President Ramon Alexander, to release some $45,000 in encumbered funds from the A&S budget to STARMETRO (formerly, TalTran). These funds were allocated and approved through the 2005-2006 SGA process to insure that FAMU students had access to ride the city buses.
As usual, the university has exhibited pure arrogance and callousness in the manner it choose to inform StarMetro of the service cancellation--via the FAMU website.
We're sure that Tallahassee City Officials probably expected more from FAMU's administration. Since VP June, as a student, did not enjoy the benefits of free bus service, he probably does not see the benefits of such service for the current student body.
With late financial aid checks, poor customer service in student affairs and employees logging onto FACEBOOK.com, students should not be surprised.

I guess the administration's not satisfied with tearing down the recruitment program and trying to block students from entering our university. Now, they seem to be going out of their way to frustrate the students we currently have.
ReplyDeleteAt least Anita Favors seems to have some genuine concern for FAMU student welfare. If Castell Bryant and Vincent June had their way, all the off-campus students who depend on the city bus would be stranded.
Wow...this totally defies logic. If the student government already has the $45,000 allocated in the budget what is the problem with the VP of Student Affairs paying for this service? The irony of 'waiting on starmetro to install new technology'...FAMU is the last place to use this as an excuse for withholding funds to anyone who provides a service to FAMU students. A service that is accessible to all FAMU students who use public transportation. Is there anything the BOT can do to override his decision in the best interest of the students? Maybe, first rescinding the interim president's $80,000 bonus and using some of those funds to shore up the fare free zone service for the summer & fall terms. Secondly, use these funds to provide overtime to the presidential search committee so they can hurry up and get rid of 'out of touch' famu administration

ReplyDeleteYou've said a boat load. But don't worry, FAMU trying to dis someone because of technology, it worst than the kettle calling the pot black.
Wasn't FAMU that overpaid the whole student body and then chalked it up to a computer (technology) glitch?
