Volunteer of the Year
Rattler Nation would like to salute Darryl E. Jones for being recognized as one of the Tallahassee Democrat's Volunteers of the Year. Darryl, one of my church members, has a presence that doesn't need to be announced, you just feel it.

There are some folks that have to tell you that they are in charge, not Darryl! His leadership skills are undeniable. Around the FAMU campus, Darryl has been referred to as the Moses General Miles of his generation. At Bethel AME we simple say that he's the "Moses" of his people.

Darryl's influence has not been limited to Black Tallahassee or FAMU, but is felt throught the Tallahassee Community.

He is a young man of great moral character, great humor, and deep and abiding love for all mankind. Darryl has been responsible for helping to start over 175 small businesses, build affordable housing, and as the volunteer chair of Kids Inc, he is making sure that the next generation gets off to a great start.

Darryl is fond of quoting one of his mentors, former U.S. Rep. Carrie Meek, "service is the price that you pay for the space that God lets you occupy." This quote truly embodies the creed and spirit that Darryl lives by. Rattler Nation salutes this outstanding young man (a FAMUan) for being a public service role model to many.
FAMU opened a brand new 30,000 square foot, $7.6 million, addition to its Black Archieves & Research Center and Museum on Friday. The new addition is the perfect blending of old and new and offers beautiful views of the Tallahassee skyline.

The new addition doubles the exhibit space of the Black Archieves. It also includes specially designed temperature controlled rooms to house delicate papers and prepare them for exhibit.

FAMU graduate Patricia Stephens Due was on hand at the Black Archieves to sign copies of her new book “Freedom in the Family”. The which was co-authored by award winning former Miami Herald columnist Tanarive Due, chronicles the 40 days Patricia spent in a Tallahassee jail after being arrested during a student protest.
