Eight of the eleven faculty members in SBI's Professional Development Division have received "pink slips" from the University. The certified letters were dated May 31, 2006. The notices told faculty that their employment with the University will cease on June 30, 2006.

Not only have the faculty members been given very short notice, but they've been given five days to vacate their offices. In other words, be gone before June 9.

According to the University, "the layoff is the result of the reorganization of the Division of Professional Development (PD) and a reallocation of its resources to enhance the probability of AACSB accreditation."

  1. With just under 50 incoming students actually accepted into SBI, there will be more layoffs on the horizon.

Keep up the good work RattlerNation.

  2. The more I read about the financial shortfall FAMU is facing, the more I believe it is deliberate. It seems as if Dr. Bryant wants FAMU to remain in a constant state of financial crisis. How else can her cuts to recruitment and complete failure to fundraise be viewed?

Clearly, the so-called Clean-Up Woman is placing her own dirt and grime on the floors so she can justify working overtime.

The Ray Charles analogy is right on point. Ask Bryant how much more damage she's going to inflict on our institution and she'll probably answer:

"Oh, well I'm gonna make it do what it do, baby!"

  6. From The FAMU Faculty Union's website: www.famuff.com

    LAYOFFS (2006)

    FAMU IS AT IT AGAIN!

In a letters dated May 31, 2006, FAMU notified the FAMU Chapter of UFF and eight (8) of the eleven (11) faculty in the School of Business' Professional Development division that they are being laid off. Their employment with the University will cease on June 30, 2006. Furthermore, they were instructed to vacate their offices five days after receipt of the layoff letter. For some of the SBI 8, the office evictions will occur before June 9.

According to the University, the "The layoff is the result of the reorganization of the Division of Professional Development (PD) and a reallocation of its resources to enhance the probability of AACSB accreditation."

Unlike many university business schools, SBI is not accredited, nor has it ever been accredited. The recognized accrediting body is the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The three remaining faculty in PD are tenured.

Since the SBI 8 are members of the UFF collective bargaining unit, they are afforded the protections of the layoff provisions of the current collective bargaining agreement. We maintain that the University violated key aspects of the agreement in the current layoff action.. We have asked to meet with the administration to explore alternatives to the severity of the layoffs.

Nevertheless, UFF understands the right of the University to aggressively seek full AACSB accreditation and accordingly reorganize SBI in a manner that respects the rights of existing faculty.
