  4. Interim President at the University of Florida 1999-2003

Why are we complaining about the length of time the interim president has been in place?

    Ex-chancellor goes to Florida
EDUCATION: Young will serve interim term starting Nov. 1

More than two years after retiring from his post as chancellor, Charles Young will be leading another university, but his tenure there will be much shorter than the nearly three decades he spent at UCLA.

The Florida Board of Regents on Thursday approved Young as the interim president of the University of Florida - the equivalent of chancellor in the University of California system - while officials there search for a permanent appointment.

"Dr. Young is extremely qualified to lead Florida's premier research institution during this interim period," said State University System of Florida Chancellor Adam Herbert in a statement.

"He brings a national reputation for excellence, an incredible depth of experience and an unrelenting passion to provide the best learning experience for all students," Herbert continued.

Young will begin his term on Nov. 1 and serve until sometime in the summer when the permanent president is expected to take over. His annual salary will be $250,000, the same as outgoing President John Lombardi.

"I am thrilled at the opportunity and look forward to serving this great university and the state," Young said in a statement.

During a press conference Wednesday, Young told reporters he would "see to it that the university continues to move forward."

UCLA and the University of Florida share many similarities; both are large schools and are in the middle of large fund raising campaigns.

Florida's enrollment tops 40,000 and the campus is involved in a campaign to raise $750 million in private funds. While at UCLA, Young headed a campus of 35,000 people and kicked off a campaign aiming to raise $1.2 billion.

At UCLA, Young's decision to accept the interim appointment was greeted with some surprise by colleagues.

"He's so well entrenched in Southern California suburban life that I was at first caught off guard by it," said Joseph Mandel, vice chancellor for legal affairs.

"It's quite a dramatic geographic move. It's a reflection of how energetic he is," he continued.

John Sandbrook, assistant provost in the College of Letters and Science said he was less surprised by Young's decision.

"Anyone who knows Chuck Young is never surprised by anything," said Sandbrook, who was an assistant to Young from 1977 to 1984 and an assistant chancellor from 1984 to 1994.

"He thought about it carefully, talked about it with Sue (his wife), talked to UC President Atkinson, and asked me some factual information about the University of Florida," Sandbrook said.

While Young has been technically retired from UCLA, Mandel said that term is a misnomer.

Young is a member of the Campaign UCLA Cabinet and leads a Board of Visitors for International Studies and Overseas Programs. He is also on the boards of directors for the Geffen Playhouse and the UCLA Armand Hammer Museum, among others.

Young said he will continue some of his roles at UCLA while working in Florida.

Current UCLA Chancellor Albert Carnesale said he wishes Young well in his new post and looks forward to his return to UCLA.

"We are delighted to have our chancellor emeritus appointed to provide such an important service to a sister institution," Carnesale said in a statement.

Mandel said that Young would bring energy, compassion and intelligence to the University of Florida.

"I'm sure he's not looking to be the permanent president," Mandel said.

He also brings his love of sports to a school whose football team is currently undefeated. But he'll miss the UCLA vs. USC football game next month as the University of Florida plays its rival Florida State.

"I'm sure he will keep an eye on the scoreboard," Sandbrook said.

  5. There wasn't a scam search for an interim president at UF like it was at FAMU...if it was who cares...I care about FAMU and the direction its going.

if we don't pay attention to and learn from history, even that which we think doesn't have anything to do with us, we are doomed to repeat it or keep from learning from other's successes and failures.

  7. To Anonymous @ 3:18 PM,

Charles Young had an extended stay at UF because the permanent presidential search process imploded.

Shortly after the search started, the Florida legisluture announced that it was abolishing the Board of Regents system and replacing it with a decentralized Board of Trustees system. None of the UF presidential candidates wanted to hired by the BOR and then come to work for a BOT that had nothing to do with his/her firing. As a result, ALL of the finalist candidates in the UF presidential search dropped out.

Young was offered an extended interim presidential contract to give UF enough time to successfully transition into the BOT system. Then, after the BOT was installed, UF promptly started its presidential anew.

FAMU's situation is nothing like UF's. There is absolutely no excuse for FAMU to be dragging its feet on the presidential search process.

  8. If Young was a correspondent student I am sure UF would be upset just like the Rattlers.

But stop trying to compare apples to maggots (scum).

Castell and Lowe are the scum of the earth and anyone trying to protect them is the puss the grows below the scum of the earth.

  10. How can anyone with a molecule of intelligence compare the situation that FAMU currently finds itself with that of UF? In plain language why is Young (a real chancellor) being discussed in the same sentence as Castell (a community college president who was removed from MDCC North campus and placed at MD medical campus)? Could it, perhaps, have something to do with "incompetence"?

  11. Instead of monitoring this board, these folks need to clean up this tihs they have created and get the f--k out of our university.

    They were never FAMU supporters.

L' folks had to run CB down like a collection agency just to get her to make a contribution to FAMU.

She don't give a good "Got Danm" about anything orange and green.
